I have been using satellite for the past few years and thought surely there has to be a better way! I was up at 5:30am using the satellite, just to have fast internet. The other day I finally got fed up with it, especially when it decided to not work at 5:30 in the am! So I did some research(thank you to these forums!) and finally decided to go with wireless internet!(I was skeptical before coming to these forums thanks to some horror stories!), but so far I am not regretting a single minute of this!

I am about 1.5 miles away from the tower and am getting that, and about 200-400 ping in world of warcraft(was getting 1500-3000 on the satellite...at 5:30 in the morning. Rolling Eyes )

This story reminds me of myself many months ago. Moved to it from dial-up and couldn't be happier.

Same here. I "dropped the dish" in November after 2 1/2 years on Hughesnet. It's like fresh air!

Satellite users - there IS another way!! Come on over!!

Same here, we ought to have our own recovery group:)

Seriously, I've had Verizon Rev A for almost two years, and it works like a champ! About 1.2 down and 400 up and latency averaging 150ms. And it even works when it snows!!

Happy New Year Everybody at EVDO Forums!!

Wow is this thread getting all my feelings wrapped up together. Let me summarize them ...

1. Using (frustrated by) Wildblue satellite for years thought surely there has to be a better way.
2. I finally got so fed up with it decided to try wireless internet.
3. It's like fresh air.
4. Former Wildblue user - wouldn't go back.
5. Verizon EVDO Rev A works like a champ (1.2 down, 400 up and latency avg 100ms)
6. It even works in the snow, sleet, freezing rain, plain old rain, clouds thick or thin and even clear skies for heaven's sake.

The only bad thing it works so well we have problems with the "Fair Access Policy" limit of 5GB per month. With Wildblue there wasn't enough good uptime to ever worry about it. Rolling Eyes

My wife and I are not "gamers" and we don't download movies or watch a lot of YouTube videos so the 5GB limit doesn't bother us.
5GB per month is just a little less than the HughesNet 200MB/day FAP.

Same here - former Hughesnet with all the problems reported by other sat users. There was nothing worse than paying $99 a month and getting 56kbps during "prime time" hours! Yeesh.

EVDO isn't perfect - others have mentioned the cap, the price, and the latency could be better, but it's exponentially better then satellite.

I've been a WB customer for three years and just got connected with Verizon this past week. Since I bought my equipment separately, I am not in a contract, but just month to month. I haven't cut the cord with WB as yet, but think I'll ask to have my account put on "hold" since I have fulfilled my contract requirements. So far, I'm a little disappointed with the speeds I'm getting. Yes, it's faster than satellite, but so far not by much. I have the CTR 350 router with the Novatel 727 USB modem plugged into that. My desktop is connected to the router via ethernet, and I use my laptop downstairs with the wireless hookup. My neighbor, who has had the same EVDO service for a year, raved about it. Just hope I can feel the extra $10 monthly is justified.

Same here but we have two kids. Laughing

Trying keeping a family of 4 under 5GB. Shocked

The Wildblue plan we had (the highest speed and FAP they offer was $79.95 per month and 17GB month FAP)

Hey if it's faster than satellite for you the reliability factor will have you quickly cutting the cord to the sky. The times when you want to "cruise" the internet like when it's bad weather and you are stuck in doors is when WB never works. Make sure you turn in your WB modem, they'll give you $50.

Trust me your neighbor raving Verizon over WB is justified and worth the extra $10. I actually had the WB $79 plan so I am saving $20 per month. Very Happy

This is one of my speed tests:

I am using Ntelos, which runs off sprints towers, and they claim to be unlimited. With my gaming and all that, I will see how truely unlimited they are, either way I am loving it. lol. I run at 68 DBI here at the house, only getting three bars, but I am happy. Either way, I was SO happy to get rid of WB! Now when I see the satellite commercials on tv I just laugh. The cellphone companies really do need to be advertising this stuff on tv, more people would see it and give it a shot then. Also, I have been converting my neighbors over to this. They were as fed up as I was. They keep coming over and thanking me for finding it. lol. Very Happy

Y'all do realize that each cell tower DOES have a capacity limit, right? At some point you and all your neighbors will max out the capacity of the T1 line (or whatever) serving the tower you're all sharing and all of your connections will slow down. Now, your cell provider can - and may eventually - increase the capacity, and it will happen a lot quicker than Hughes or WB putting up another satellite - but I'm just sayin'...

This is true however carriers will always add more capacity. I believe in some areas some of the cell towers are running on fiber opticts.

Helps if there is more then 5 people out here where I live. Somewhat doubtful that all five of us will be tying up the tower anytime soon! lol.
