I am unsure where this should be posted. But I am curious if anyone has been using VOIP on their Iphone with EVDO to get them coverage wherever they are? I am new to all this and am just trying to figure out how to get over on the man with my minute plan. I have not bought anything yet because I havent figured it all out yet. But I am hoping I can find someone that has already gone through the learning curve and wasted their $?? lol. But seriously, I hope to get some feedback.
As I understand it, I could get an Iphone, jailbreak it and crack it, put an app like:
http://thebigboss.org/2008/10/25/voice-over-ip-over-3g/
Then use fring for the VOIP calls. Now I dont understand how I could get a phone number for the VOIP calls. I dont want to use up my minutes in the ATT plan, or whoever I decide to use once the phone is cracked. So far, am I close to making sense? If this is all right so far, then I need to make the phone have data service everywhere I go, or at least where regular cell phones work. This is where the EVDO equipment comes in right? If I get one of the portable EVDO antennas, would this get me the data service everywhere, while in my car, etc?
Thanks in advance for the help/suggestions.
Jeff

aside from hacking your iphone and getting that app, all you would need is the same EVDO gear we describe to enable "3G service" for the iPod Touch in this article:
