Hi Sterlinrod,
You are correct - tethering simply means you are using your (supported) phone/PDA as your internet modem. As for the Touch Diamond, it was originally listed as NOT being tether-capable, but it looks like things have changed! I contacted Sprint to double-check and the Touch Diamond IS indeed tether-capable
Sorry to hear about the ICS troubles... unfortunately that device is not currently officially supported by any of the routers available (it is much easier to set up a gaming console if you have a router). |

I've a question on tethering and billing ...........
I've a Verizon Wireless account - With two - 10 year old phones (Wife and I) -- Two phone numbers - Voice only.
We are going to replace perhaps with two Dare phones - As I read - These can be tethered for Data on the laptop.
We each travel - Seperately.
Currently we use DSL at one of the houses and WiFi traveling.
WiFi is clumbersome at best and I'm going to drop the DSL as I travel extensively - Hence the need for an Air Card or tether one of these new phones.
The billing question then is --
What would be the Data charge for each phone - As connection to the Internet on a daily basis would be needed.
TIA ........

Does it work okay and are the speeds/latency as good as using a pcmcia/usb adapter in the same areas? I have heard good and bad about the past Treos pertaining to the operating system on the device. But I would like to hear how well tethering works in particular. |
sabersaw,
I have two Palm 800w that i frequently tether. I've used the internet connection sharing application that ships with the Palm to tether with a USB cable and via BlueTooth to my laptop. I also use and recommend WMWifiRouter to tether this phone. Yes, it costs $30 over the free ICS program, but it gives me a much more robust connection, and allows me to tether via WiFi (to multiple client machines at once), USB, or BlueTooth.
My home internet connection is actually a USB modem (U720) attached to a Cradlepoint CTR-350, and couldn't be happier. Frequently, (especially if I'm reaching Sprints 5GB/month cap), I will tether the Palm 800W to the Cradlepoint via USB cable. Honestly, I cannot tell the difference between the U720 and the Palm800 in download speed or ping time. I have noticed the upload is a bit slower on the Palm vs the U720, but still consistently above 150Kbps.
BTW, I've owned a KR1, Linksys WRT54G-3G, but the Cradlepoint beats them both, hands-down. Now, only if they come out with a CTR350 firmware that supports OpenDNS on the Sprint network.....
All-in-all tethering the Palm800W works great! It's the reason I bought them in the first place. As with most Windows Mobile phones I've had experience with, a daily soft reset doesn't hurt. |

Thanks CodinAndHaulin for that info.. very practical and useful! I guess I have to wait to see the Pre in action before pulling the trigger on the 800. But the ICS/router wifi sharing, sounds slick even if it's a couple of bucks. I actually had assumed there was a way to make that work. But figured it would take hacking up some obscure WM application to pull it off.
Thanks Maureen for creating a new thread with the Rev. A phones. |

. . .
All 3 of those are PDA's, so tethering is $15/month (remember that you also have to have a data plan with ANY PDA!)
Unfortunately, out of those 3 only the Omnia has an antenna port - and like the Dare, it's located beneath the battery cover.
Router compatibility coming soon... |
What's the verdict? Is the Omnia (i910) router-compatible? Any experience using an external antenna with it? |

In our tests, the Omnia worked with the MBR1000/CTR500 with firmware version 1.5.1 and the CTR350/PHS300 with firmware version 2.3. Since the Omnia is not officially supported by Cradlepoint, we cannot guarantee compatibility nor can we provide full technical support for a router used with an unsupported device (and Cradlepoint will not provide technical support for unsupported devices). However, 3Gstore does offer a 14-day return policy on Cradlepoint routers and if you are unable to tether this phone successfully you can return the router for a full refund (less shipping).
As for the antenna, it does have an antenna port but it is located beneath the battery cover - you have to remove the cover or punch/drill a hole in it in order to access it. |
