just wondering if there is a way to change my ip address, because i have recently been having slow speeds with my u727(150-250kbps down/ 40-60kbps up) when i usually get 3 times that. and pings in the 200s and 300s.

So, i did a tracert and the pings are high from the first jump(250-500ms). According to ipligence the ip address of that first hop(66.174.216.64) is actually in bedminster, NJ. This would explain my high pings and slow throughput.

The ip address assigned to my router is also located in bedminster, NJ, and yes I've taken the router out of the loop still the same thing.

I live in northern california(right by the oregon border) weed, ca.

So, my questions are why is it going across the U.S. to connect, and how do i go about making it closer to me.

thanks,
mike

btw, my signal is -72 to -75

Bedminster NJ is merely where the Verizon office is located that registered the netblock your IP address belongs to. The WHOIS database - what your "ipligence" (?) service talks to - only contains contact info for the parties assigned the network or domain name. It does not contain any location info for network resources at all. None. You cannot tell anything about the location on the surface of the earth of your router by checking WHOIS.

You cannot change the IP address assigned to you by your upstream provider, nor would you ever need to. I am a newbie to EVDO, but not to IP networking, and I can assure you, the specific IP address you received has nothing to do with your problem, nor it is actually located in New Jersey. It's located in the same city as your cell tower.

I don't personally have Verizon but I do have Alltel and I assume they work in a similar setup.

From what I can see the connections are bounced around a bit. For example to traceroute to my friends house who lives 5 minutes away it goes through so many routes. Goes to main internet backbones of Level3 in Cleveland, Chicago, and Saint Louis even though I live in Wisconsin. The internet is naturally kinda scattered to get from point a to point b.

Not sure about this but I believe they route your traffic through some central hub to be able to count traffic maybe? It would be much more responsive if you just connected to the cell phone tower and it instantly put your data to the T1 upstream provider but it is all routed to some central location.

Also locations that cell providers put for their tower are very innacurate. For example my IP is traced back to "Homer, MI" even though I live in "Appleton, WI" (hundreds of miles away). More residential ISPs are much more accurate on allocating IP addresses to a certain location.
