|
|
Trying to set up a second computer and UM150 USB modem. Need help - brand new to this stuff.
Background: I have one laptop computer that I have been using with a UM150VW USB modem and Verizon BroadbandAccess/NationalAccess. It has been working fine with no problems. Was just given a second laptop: it is an older laptop and I want to set it up also with Verizon Broadband Access. I currently only have the one UM150 modem I am using on the first computer. I will use that same modem for the time-being on the second computer and once I confirm that I can get this to work, will buy another so I have one for each computer.
1 - Is it possible to use more than one computer (and obviously, therefore, more than one UM150 USB modem) with the Verizon Broadband access at the same time? Or will it not work? I have seen some posts here that indicate the Verizon has to "activate" the USB modem? How is that done? Will Verizon activate more than one modem on an account?
2 - What hardware do I need on the second computer other than a USB modem? Do I need to check that the second laptop (the one I just received) has any other particular hardware? It runs Windows XP SP 3 and it has USB 1.1 ports (rather than USB 2.0). Will a UM150 USB modem work with the older USB 1.1 type ports?
3 - I know I need Verizon's VZAccess Manager software. I have downloaded it to a folder on the second computer, but not yet installed it. Do I just plug the UM150 into the second laptop, install the VZAccess Manager software and boom, I will have internet access? Or is there more to it?
What else will I need in the way of hardware/software, or what else will I need to know in order to get the second laptop connected to the internet? Like I said, this is my first time. Thank you so much - sure do appreciate the the help!

3Gstore has helped thousands of customers make the right choices for their EVDO setup... We are here to do the same for you.
We suggest calling us Toll Free: (866) 347-8673Open Mon-Fri: 9AM-7PM Central or email sales@ 3gstore.com
With that being said the easiest way for you to share your connection is going to be with a router. A router does not require you to open the vzaccess manager software you just insert the modem(UM150) and connect to the router via wifi or ethernet and bang you and the other computer will be surfing away.
I recommend any of the cradlepoint routers that 3gstore offers, you can view them here. http://www.3gstore.com/routers
We look forward to serving you as our next customer!
With a router you will not buy another modem and pay an additional monthly fee to verizon wireless per month just to use your other computer. Think of the savings if you only could use one modem and a router to connect 2 or more computers. If you want to see if the modem will work in your other laptop you will need to install the VZAccess Manager and run the software. You should have no problem. |

Thanks very much for your response. Although very technical in many respects on computers, wireless networks are all new to me. So sounds like if I get a router, I will also need a wireless pc card (or some such type of hardware) for the second PC in order to receive the signal (?). Thinking about it further, will I also need a wireless card for the first PC as well? Do I have that right?: I will need to purchase a router and two wireless cards?
Thanks!

If your computers do not have a wifi card? Then yes you will need a wifi usb adapter.
We sell that too, or you can pick them up at your local electronics store.

You can get away by purchasing just 1 USB wifi adapater for now and buying an ethernet cable which you can plug into the back of one of your computers and the other end to the router. Or you can go with the Cradlepoint MBR1000 which has 4 ethernet ports. So you wont need to buy wifi adapters, that's if your not ready to make the switch to wifi. |

| The second laptop (the really old one I just got for free) came with a Netgear 108 Mbps Wireless PC Card that you slide into the side of the laptop. Would that work? Would I then need just one router, to which I would connect one laptop to it by ethernet cable and the other through the PC card? |

Carol,
Instead of purchasing another usb modem, you can purchase a router and share the connection with the two computers. This will allow you to be on both computers at the same time. Your um150 is compatible with the following cradlepoint routers.
The CTR350 is very small and portable - just slightly bigger than a deck of cards. It has 1 ethernet port, so if you have to hardwire anything via ethernet cable, you can.
The CTR500 is slightly larger than the 350 and adds support for express cards as well as USB and a port for and external Wifi antenna. Also added with Firmware version 1.3.3 is support for Load balancing.
The PHS300 has an internal rechargeable battery that allows you to have a hotspot anywhere you go - no external power source necessary. The battery lasts about 2 hours. This router does not have an ethernet port, so you can't hardwire anything with this router
The MBR1000 is Cradlepoint's flagship router. This router has 4 ethernet ports and is the first EVDO router to use wireless N technology. The WiFi range on this router will be about 6-10x wider than any of the other routers. Added with Firmware version 1.3.3 is support for Load balancing:
If you don't want to do that and you want to get another device or just swap it from computer to computer, then yes the modem will work with the older laptop. The only thing is it will be a slower transfer rate and you will need to install vz access manager. You might want to purchase a usb y adapter to help with the older laptop.
If you have any more questions, please feel free to call our sales team at 866-3GSTORE (866-347-8673).

I just bought a Cradlepoint CTR350 from these guys... at $99 after rebate, it's a lot cheaper than Amazon.com, and you get great support, too.
I absolutely HATE Verizon Access manager. After installing it, you can go to Network Connections in Windows and set up a new dial-up connection.
| Quote: | General Tab
Connect using: Pantech UM150
Phone Number: #777
(include the # sign)
All other boxes blank
Options tab:
Dialing Options: Display progress while connecting
Redialing Options:
Redial attempts:3
Time between redial attempts: 1 Minute
Idle time before hanging up: 20 minutes
All other boxes blank
Security options tab:
Typical (recommended settings): Checked
Verify my identity as follows: Allow unsecured password
All other boxes blank |
When you're done, give it a name; I use "Broadband." You can then create a shortcut (mine is on the Quicklaunch toolbar) to give one-click connections. |

| Verizons air cards/modems are basicly telephones...each with a unique telephone number.I dont believe there is any way to run a second modem without doubling your monthly cost. Now,if you are talking about using a second computer within the limitations of a home network the previous replies should get you where you want to be...good luck...:>) |
