|
|
I have been reading a lot more lately about EVDO and evaluating my setup but I really do not know of a single resource to go to for a lot of information on terms, their meanings and their effects on performance.
For instance:
What is ping and its effect on performance
What is latency and its effect on performance
What is RSSI and its effect on performance
What is RSI and its effect on performance
What is Packet loss and its effect on performance
What does all the info on the ##DEBUG screen means and its effect on performance
Antennas and their effect on performance
Amplifiers and their effect on performance
Routers and their effect on performance
Modems and their effect on performance
Etc
You get the idea. I've learned pieces of this from various forums and blogs but I have not found a location that helps tie it all together.
Does such a location/source exist? |

this forum is the ultimate source for all/any EVDO answers you seek.
its just not going to be as convenient as you would like.

ping/latency are the same thing: the amount of time in milliseconds that it takes for a target server to respond to a request. the longer it takes, the slower the performance. long ping times affect gaming/voip/vpn/streaming.

not sure RSI is a valid acronym. RSSI is explained here. the better the RSSI, the more stable/reliable the connection, and to a point - the better your speeds are. to learn how to test for RSSI and understand its relationship to speeds, check out this article: http://www.EVDOinfo.com/RSSI

that too, is best explained here. the loss of packets of information means what you need to send/receive, was not completely sent/received. that can affect performance.

Forum Fanatic Jim_In_VA has a great explanation of debug screen

Amplifiers and their effect on performance |
antennas and amps are known to improve signal/RSSI for most users, and improved signal can result in faster speeds and more stable connections.
| Quote: | | Routers and their effect on performance |
older cellular routers were known to sometimes reduce performance, especially when a device was not 'officially supported'. modern 3g routers like those from cradlepoint, are known for often improving performance. routers can also improve performance by allowing a user to locate the attached evdo modem in part of house/office where signal is better.
| Quote: | | Modems and their effect on performance |
after performing tens of thousands of "speedtests" on nearly every EVDO device from sprint or verizon, our opinion is that all currently available modems, given the same signal, perform the same _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas/Routers/Amps :: Verizon EVDO :: Sprint EVDO :: Why Buy from 3Gstore? |

Great information for newbies like us. I have slowly been feeling my way through all this. Licklog, thanks for asking this question. I have been afraid to ask.
Since going from dialup to air card it has been like day and night (I love it). I thought I was stuck with dialup until my son mentioned an air card. It is surprising how many people I talk to have never heard of one. I have never seen any advertisements on air cards from anyone including Verizon. Even they didn't mention an air card when I moved here so thought dialup was it. |

Any chance of seeing an updated version of this explanation. Lots of different information and a completely different layout (many tabs) on the current Sprint Connection Manager ##DEBUG Tab. |
