|
|
I was wondering if one of the Cradlepoint routers would help my situation:
My current setup is a Novatel S720 (PCMCIA) card installed in a Linksys WRT54g3g-st serving up the internet to my house. As we have a 5GB/month cap (thank you, Sprint), I'd like the option of tethering my phone(s) to a router to supply the home internet for part of the month.
I currently use wmwifirouter to tether my Palm 800W to a single laptop, and have even used it to supply internet to the router with its access point to access point option. However, I am looking for something more plug-and-play. Also, using the phone wifi and cellular connection at the same time eats the battery faster than the wall charger can replenish.
Upon emailing Cradlepoint, the word is that tethering my Palm 800w is not supported. I did notice that a firmware updates allows support of RNDIS mode. Would this allow me to use an otherwise unsupported phone if I put the 800w in RNDIS mode? Should I then be able to swap between a USB aircard (like a U720) and my phone running in RNDIS mode?
Does the 3G Store allow returns if this scenario doesn't work? I already have a Kyocera KR1 and Linksys WRT54g3g-st and I don't need another evdo router that I can't tether to.
Thank you in advance. Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

| That was me who tested the 800w, and it definitely works. I didn't have to change modes or anything, it was as simple as plugging in the Treo and going to "Internet Sharing" and connect via USB. I did not have to start a connection by opening a browser, it automatically dialed #777 and connected to the router in under 10 seconds. I was shocked at how easy it was... |

| Thanks for the replies, people! Looks like I'll be getting a USB aircard and a Cradlepoint router to play with. |

Just to follow-up. I recieved my CTR350 and U720 from 3GStore today. The Cradlepoint works awesome with both the U720 (PPP mode) and the Palm800W (RNDIS mode)! I am using wmwifirouter on the 800W to tether via USB because I have had much better luck initiating and keeping the Powervision connection than the built-in (and free) internet connection sharing application.
I can hot-swap the two devices and the Cradlepoint doesn't miss a beat.
Both the U720 and 800W have roughly the same throughput and ping times. I am a very happy camper. Thank you to the members of this forum as well as the 3G store. |

Another follow-up. It seems that the Cradlepoint is having trouble with DNS resolution when I'm tethering the 800W. When tethering the phone, the internet would work for a few minutes, and then I was unable to reach any sites.
To resolve the issue, I had to turn off DNS relay on the CTR350 and then specify Sprint's caching DNS server addresses on the WAN page of the router configuration (I think Sprint blocks all non-sprint DNS queries). Now it appears to be happy with either the USB modem in PPP mode and the cell phone in RNDIS mode. I suppose my DNS resolution speed suffers, but its a decent tradeoff to be able to tether my phones.
Is this a bug with the CTR350 or just a consequence of Sprint's ISP policies? If I use the U720 card in my laptop in NDIS mode, I have no issues. |

Out of curiosity, when the 800w is plugged in, is it using 192.168.0.1 as the gateway address? I have seen this particular behaviour on a few RNDIS devices. When it occurs, it causes the router to get confused on how to send out data. A simple fix was to change the ip address of the router to something like 192.168.5.1. |

No, wmwifirouter defaults to 192.168.3.1, which I left unchanged. I just think it is odd that DNS relay is not working.
I've got a feeling that Cradlepoint wouldn't entertain my support issue, as the Palm 800W is not on their supported device list. |

I think sfisher might have been talking about the address on the Cradlepoint, not using WMWiFiRouter. I have always had my PHS300 set to use a gateway of 192.168.10.1, that way there were no conflicts with anything. My Treo 800w works fine, I don't have to reset it or anything... |

Ahh - now that I read sfisher's post again, I caught the nuance. I will try a different address on the CTR350 and see if it makes any difference. Thanks for the clarification. |
