|
|
I'm new here, and have looked through the forums as best I could, so I apologize if this is an "old question". But it's new to me.
We recently bought the Linksys router for a PC5750 Verizon mobile broadband card we picked up from the Verizon store. We used to have a nice USB style one, but we're trying to use it on one desktop computer + wirelessly for a laptop downstairs so we can watch the baby while using the internet.
At first, the router wouldn't do anything but power the card, and after talking to Linksys, I found the "old problem" that the firmware needed upgrading to 2.01.6. Fine, done. We checked that the PC5750's firmware version is correct, too.
Now, however, with default router settings, the card was "Connecting" when I pushed the button, but on the router access web screen I received "authentication fail" errors when trying to connect. Then I tried setting the internet connection type to PPPoE instead of the Automatic setting, entering my Verizon username & password, and while it doesn't say authentication fail anymore, it tells me it cannot connect to the broadband server.
Are there additional settings (such as a host IP or something) that need to be set? If so, how can I go about finding out the required connection type and its "magic numbers"?
When I called Verizon (and as suggested in other posts here) they did not want me using the card with a router, and told me "well, you can do it, but we can't tell you how. Call Linksys or look online." The Linksys tech I spoke to had me push reset a few times and then declared my router router as broken (which I doubt until proven otherwise) and has already authorized its replacement.
Any help would be extremely appreciated.

The card is activated, and the router tells me the signal is Excellent. It does attempt to connect. As far as "proven operational", we would have to go back to the store to try that, as I don't have any other pCMCIA slot computers anywhere in the house. If I assume it's operational, what should I do? |

do not assume it is operational. prove it.
keeping a pcmcia solution when you do not own a pcmcia slot computer, is a baaaaad idea. the info on the card needs to be updated from time to time, and if your router dies, you want to still be able to get online with at least ONE computer, right?
not sure who told you to get pcmcia, but i would stop listening to them.
USB is the way to go. very "universal". _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas/Routers/Amps :: Verizon EVDO :: Sprint EVDO :: Why Buy from 3Gstore? |

Is there a router that will take a USB verizon mobile broadband card? That's what got us into this router in the first place.
It doesn't help that neither LinkSys nor Verizon are either able or willing to help (in that order) when we call them. We had a nice USB Verizon unit but we had to transfer it between computers. At the Verizon store they were all too willing to tell me the only router I could use is the LInksys one I mentioned + I would need the big card to run on it.
With a USB router that would work for this, or even one for the smaller slot card on my wife's laptop that we tried (my computer has no port for that one), we would likely be sitting pretty.
Thanks again for your input. |

let this be a lesson to you, the verizon store people, are not that smart.
there are two routers i would recommend, since you mention the smaller (expresscard) slot on your wife's laptop:
Cradlepoint CTR500 (smaller, portable): http://www.EVDOinfo.com/CTR500
Cradlepoint MBR100 (wider wifi range): http://www.EVDOinfo.com/MBR1000
get either from the EVDO Experts at http://3gstore.com/cradlepoint and i promise you'll get superior customer and tech support from people who actually use/test/review this technology.
you will of course need to swap your pc5750 out again, this time for either the usb modem you had before, or the verizon v740 expresscard that would work on wife's laptop.
In fact, if you are within verizon 30-day trial period, you may want to consider canceling the verizon service you have now, and getting the entire package from 3gstore - http://3gstore.com/verizon
We'll provide you superior "single source support" and you'll qualify for discounts on routers, antennas, amps and anything else you may end up adding to your solution in the future. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas/Routers/Amps :: Verizon EVDO :: Sprint EVDO :: Why Buy from 3Gstore? |

From your question it doesn't sound like your card is active. You need to insert the card into a computer the first time you pick up a card from the verizon wireless store, and then stick it in a computer and activate it. If you don't the card will not work.
The store can tell you it's activated. One thing is the card being activated in their billing system and another is for the card to be physically activated.
I would return the card to verizon wireless and order from the 3gstore. We send the card activated to you so you don't have to deal with it.
Good Luck |
