Federal Communications Commission approves Verizon Wireless purchase of Alltel for $28 billion
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal regulators are signing off on Verizon Wireless' planned $28 billion purchase of Alltel Corp. The deal will create the nation's largest wireless carrier.
In a 5-0 vote with partial dissents by both Democrats on the panel, the Federal Communications Commission decided Tuesday to allow Verizon Wireless to move ahead with its purchase of Alltel. Verizon is paying $5.9 billion and assuming $22.2 billion of Alltel's debt.
The FCC is attaching several conditions to the deal, including a requirement that Verizon Wireless honor Alltel's existing roaming agreements for four years.
The Justice Department approved the deal last week after Verizon agreed to sell assets in 22 states.
Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon and Vodafone Group PLC. |

any idea of a time frame till the takeover? i'm no longer under contract for my phones and was wondering if i should get new phones before the takeover. i'd like to continue some of the alltel plan features when verizon assumes my contract.

Another thing i had heard is that Verizon was going to have to sale its assets in Arizona and New Mexico among others. Does that mean that alltel will be picking up those states or will both loose those areas??? Right now I am in Arizona and am thinking about moving to New Mexico. I have for the most part liked Alltel. Hate to be forced off this line to move to another. |

| Seems the market I am in is one that may be sold off. You got to wonder why when there was no VZW service here to start with. Alltel was the only CDMA provider around that was reliable. Looks like we get a pig in a sack when most of us would much rather move on to VZW instead of getting whacked in the pocket book or by restrictive service contracts from a new carrier who we have no choice but sign up with!!! |

| Another merger that is sure to reduce innovation and choice, while keeping prices high. How long before we lose Alltel's unlimited data policy? Monopolies are not good for consumers. |

I was hoping it would fall through, so much for wishfull thinking.. By the way, Alltel has already removed the unlimited data policy for wireless internet (unless you have a smartphone). They just aren't charging us yet.. I'm sure Verizon will speeeeed the charges along, though..

| I know Verizon has a limit (5GB per month?). What do they do if you exceed the cap? Slow you down? Charge extra? |

Verizon says Alltel deal to close Jan. 9, slightly behind schedule
NEW YORK (AP) -- The $5.9 billion acquisition of cellular carrier Alltel Corp. by Verizon Wireless will close on Jan. 9, Verizon Communications Inc. said Friday in a regulatory filing.
The deal, which as announced in June, will make Verizon Wireless the country's largest wireless carrier, with about 78 million subscribers.

Verizon Wireless had initially hoped to close the deal before the end of 2008, but the regulatory review stretched into December, later than expected. To gain approval for the deal, Verizon Wireless pledged to sell assets where its network overlaps with Alltel's.
In addition to paying $5.9 billion for Alltel's privately held equity, Verizon Wireless is assuming $22.2 billion in debt. Despite the difficult credit markets, Verizon said in December that it had received commitments from eight institutions to provide $17 billion of financing.
Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon Communications of New York and Vodafone Group PLC of the U.K.
Alltel is based in Little Rock, Ark. Its wide-ranging wireless network covers mainly the interior of the country. It is the fifth-largest carrier in the U.S.
Verizon Communications shares added 49 cents to $34.40 in midday trading, while Vodafone shares slipped 35 cents to $20.09. |

i ordered new phones today. i figure it's cheaper for me to retain alltel's plan features rather than get a new contract under verizon. wonder if they'll try to mess with my plan anyway.
we have dsl available locally now (512/256) so if they mess with my evdo service i may be forced to go with our locally available service. it's cheaper than thru alltel. time will tell.
