|
|
Hello All,
I'm new to this forum. But, I have a question I'm hoping somebody may have insight into. I've had both a sprint cell phone & broadband modem for over 2 years now. I would like to get one of these newer phones like an Instict but they tell me that I can't combine my USB modem onto an "Everything" plan???
What I want to know is it possible for me to get a phone such as the Instict and use my regular voice number for voice calls and use my modem number for data usage? When I was with ATT/Cingular/Cellular One I could do this since they used sim cards and my phone held 4 sim cards. On the telephone, it was just a matter of selecting which sim card to use.
Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi Tagii,
Since Sprint and Verizon don't use SIM cards, what you're referring to isn't possible.
However, it is possible to use a phone as a modem, so that you only have one device (and usually save money). With a tether-capable phone, you can attach the phone via USB cable to your computer or even a router and use it as a modem.
Unfortunately, you cannot talk on the phone and be on the internet at the same time. If you're in tether mode, your phone will ring when a call comes in, but if you answer it you will be disconnected from the internet (if you ignore the call and let it go to voicemail, you will stay connected).
Also, most Sprint phones and PDAs don't operate on Rev-A. The only tether-capable phone on Sprint's network that lets you access the Rev-A network is the HTC Mogul, but it is expected that more will debut next year.
You can check out more info about Sprint plans here and read some FAQ here |

Don't forget about the Treo 800, it's tetherable and it is Rev. A thru Sprint. Plus, I have used it successfully on my CradlePoint PHS300 router. |

Here you go, Alex...this is the Speedtest I just ran a few minutes ago here in my office, Treo 800w on Sprint connected to my PHS300:
The Treo 800 is most definitely a Rev. A device, I looked it up on the Palm website just to make sure. |

Thank you for the 800w speed tests! It's interesting that Sprint has not made much of an effort at all to promote the fact that several of their phones now have Rev-A.
As far as tethering goes, it certainly looks like the 800w is a viable option, especially since it works with the router! |

| The Motorola V950 Renegade is Rev A also. So far with a good signal I've gotten around 1.2mbps down/520kbps up. At work the signal isn't so good so I only get 148k/38k (average). |

| I've discovered that if I set my Renegade to the "mass data storage" function instead of "modem" it will also charge through the USB cable. On my old Sanyo phones the USB cable didn't charge them so I could only be online around 3 hours before I had to disconnect to put the phone on charge. Since I won't have FIOS for the first few weeks when I move this will be a huge plus! |
