Thanks for the info, Alex. I had read this as a rumor on another forum, was hoping it wasn't true, but if it is, it's good to get that info out there.
I have a question about "subscriptions" in the eyes of Sprint, though. I bought my U720 ~18 months ago, of course with the typical 2 year contract. I have no major complaints with the service, and would love to keep using it. So when I reach the 2 year mark for my contract, I plan to just continue on with it. Since my account was started prior to 11/2/08, will I still be exempt from the overage charges, even when I am just continuing on a monthly basis? I would think the answer is yes, my account would be exempt, but I don't know if they see the account differently after the contract time is technically over.
Again, I plan to just continue my service, but since I hover in the 7-10GB/month range, I certainly don't want to be paying ANOTHER $250/month for EVDO service.
So basically my question boils down to, if our accounts were created prior to 11/2/08, we should be exempt?
Thanks for clearing up what might be considered a dumb question!

Hmm that's an interesting twist. Instead of companies competing on speed it seems like there going to start competing on how much they charge you for going over.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could get it down to $1 a GB like Time Warner's cable?
Thank god I don't have to worry about overage charges.
It seems like with any of the service people would be better off to get 2 cards and swap them. I can't see how they can justify the overage price when a second card would cost that of 1GB in overages. Its such a joke. |

Its such a joke. | It would seem like the carriers would be better off selling a service in $5G/month blocks for a single card. They wouldn't have to subsidize the unnecessary hardware and a user wouldn't have to hassle swapping it. I wonder if they *don't want* single users using more data because two customers is better than one in their business model.

If I change my hardware device does this have any impact on my account status in terms of the overage charges?
I'm just worried that someday I'll bust my EVDO antenna off and getting a new one extends my contract and makes me subject to their new fee structure. _________________ --Larry |

Doing an ESN swap doesn't affect your contract in anyway.
IF you extend your contract OR renew, you will now be bound by the new terms of service at the time you renew. So, depending on what is going on, it *may* make sense to purchase a new device outright and doing an ESN swap, so that your contract isn't changed. This is more money, but your contract will remain as is. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

ouch! Hopefully you can call up Sprint and have them limit your service so that you can't use it anymore once you hit 5GB.
I hate to say it, and I didn't think I'd ever say it, but for home-only broadband (ie: you don't really intend to go mobile with it, or not much) HughesNet just trumped all the EVDO providers minus Alltel (and that's not going to last forever); sure, it's not as reliable and has higher latency, but at least they offer you a cap-free window each night (only for 5 hours though)...and are actually expanding their bandwidth and availability (though you REALLY pay for it).
it's a real shame; let's hope WiMAX doesn't follow the same path. |

| So, like an idiot I changed to verizon cause now we have coverage here, but did keep my sprint service for broadband and it is unlimited, only thing I let my son take it back to college with him, so I need to buy another, I am wondering if adding another U727, if I would be under the main contract as in not having that 5G cap? since I am still a customer....grrr! |

I've blasted them time and time again on their forums over this ordeal, and you are not alone on this. Buzzaboutwireless.com has been a hornet's nest over this and our petition drive to kill the 5GB cap has resulted in the above announcement.
All EXISTING accounts are grandfathered, the NEW accounts are to get the caps.
I've been ramping over 6-7GB on a regular basis, using them as my Sole Service provider.
This decision has not been very popular, as one high-level CSR has informed me, so this compromise was put into place. |
