|
|
Hi all. I'm at a contact renewal point with my Sprint EVDO card since my new laptop requires the USB type and I have the old PCMIA type. So this got me thinking. My phone service is with ATT/Cingular. Does anybody know the speed differences between Sprint and ATT 3G service? My principal use is for dialing into my Slingbox, so the better the service, the better the streaming. My Sprint service will do it, but better is better. I couldn't find a good comparo through Google, so I came to the experts.
Also, are the new cards any faster than my old PCMIA type?
Thanks for your help,
Mike |

I can help with this, I've had both. It depends on where you are. HSDPA is slightly faster, but it's not available in near as many places. If you do a lot of travelling, more often than not, you're going to have AT&T's slower, EDGE connection, unless you're in a more urban area. They have increased their 3g coverage quite a lot, but it's no where near up to par with Sprint's network. AT&T has coverage in about 200 towns, but if you drive ten miles outside of any of those towns it's back to 2g. On the upside of that, EDGE is a lot more responsive, less latency, than Sprint's 1xrtt. They are both about the same speed once the data gets moving, but AT&T's EDGE is a lot snappier. So the answer is there is upsides to both, it just depends on where you plan on using it. If your traveling like I do, I'd stay with Sprint, because you are going to have broadband in more places.
You do know that both services have a 5 gig per month cap and you're gonna burn through it pretty quick woth that slingbox? |

You can contact 3GStore.com with the locations you plan on using this and they will check coverage for both carriers. While HSDPA can be a bit faster, the coverage area is MUCH smaller on AT&T than it is on Sprint. waynefoutz is correct, if you plan on traveling with your data device, Sprint would be the way to go.
Email sales @ 3gstore.com and the EVDO experts will be happy to check your coverage and make a recommendation for you. |

Is it true that with AT&T you will also get access to 17,000 WIFI hotspots (including McDonald, StarBuck, etc.. over the states? If that is the case, then AT&T HSPDA is better than Sprint.
Just a thought |
