I currently have a Sprint S720 PCMCIA card, and the service is great. I'm switching laptops, and will only have USB ports available to me -- so I am going to be switching my S720 out for a USB based EVDO Modem. I am an avvid dual booter between Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux, and while I am not concerned about support for any of the USB modems for Windows -- I am concerned about Linux support.

Does anyone have any experience with either of the modems that Sprint is currently offering with Ubuntu?

Sierra Wireless Compass 597
Novatel Wireless Ovation U727

Thank you...

Definitley go with the U727, there is even a Sprint setup guide for Linux (Ubuntu) available for download.

The CDU-680 has a installer script built-in, but it only seems to work properly on Ubuntu 7.10 and requires some modification for 8.04.

I see in looking through the document that, the usbserial driver has a limit of 500kbps, and that would be a limiting factor for these modems under Linux. Do you know if either of these cards are supported by other drivers that may not have this limit -- or if there is a method of using NDIS support?

Thanks...

I know I'm late with this, but any of the Sierra Wireless USB modems now can take use of the 2.6 kernel's "sierra.ko" wireless driver, which gives you better speeds than the "usbserial" driver (allegedly; really, there's not much difference esp. if you up the packet size).

I use that and "Gnome PPP" when I don't use my PHS300 and my speeds are excellent (typing this on it now).

I am using the U727 with GnomePPP on Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy). This particular release of Ubuntu already has compiled airprime drivers for the U727 that give you normal connection speeds (I usually get 1.2mb down and about 400kb up, which is the same as when I use Windows).

Soon I'm going to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 to see if it fixes some minor oddities, like having to eject the 727's "cdrom" drive to get ubuntu to recognize that it's a usb drive (the 727 has a microSD slot or something that gets in the way).

If you want a more detailed step-by-step of what I did to get things working, let me know.

I have sprint 597e card and I use this guide with no problems. I have 8.04 on an Acer7520 laptop. I have used this guide with several other laptops that have sprint cards and have had no problems.
