Verizon No-Contract, Month-to-Month EVDO data service

Does the new month-to-month service recently unveiled by Verizon include services to USB modem and data cards?

I don't know what Verizon has offered here that is new. For current users, contract fullfillment goe to a month to month plan anyway.

Nice that you can start a new line of service with your own device without a contract though.

The fact that you can try it and not have to commit to 2 years is a great marketing idea. I assumed an account so I wouldn't have to commit to 2 years just in case the service wasn't that great where I live. I convinced a neighbor to do the same thing and she said if she had to commit to 2 years, she wouldn't have signed up.

The whole idea is not to be stuck in a contract. The month to month gives flexibility as well as taking the pressure off of people that may not feel comfortable with a contract that they may not be able to fulfill due to life changing circumstances.

A good example of flexibility is someone who lives in Upstate New York for the summer and an aircard is their only means of broadband, but they live in Florida for 9 months a year where free wireless internet is available. They can start and stop anytime at will.

Good news for me (for once in my life)

I started a Verizon trial on July 26, 2008. I was having intermittent connection issues and when it came close to my trial ending on August 23, I called and got a 30 day extension.

Because of this forum posting the press release of Verizon's new month to month service on September 22nd, I canceled my trial and turned in all my gear to the local Go-Wireless store where I started in the first place.

They gave me back my initial investment of $117.00+ on their hardware (a UM150)

Also because it was a cancelled trial, Verizon has to wave the $175.00 cancellation fee and give me back all my money except the $35.00 activation fee. As of now I am getting another refund from them for about $165.00.

I then went to E-bay and purchased a mint condition Novatel U727 earlier this week. It cost me $129.00 including shipping. I also purchased an adapter cable from another EBay store for $13.85 including shipping.
The Novatel showed up Saturday (yesterday morning).

I called Verizon to activate and the first two sales reps said there was no such thing as a month to month plan! The third however had an above average Verizon I.Q. and was able to sell me the plan. He told me it would be activated within 45 minutes.

1 ½ hours later..no confirmation e-mail. He also never gave me my order number before he hung up.

After making two more phone calls to Verizon’s crack team of sales staff, I found yet another above average Verizon person that took my SSI number, looked up my order number and my location code of my original order, then directed me to support.

Now I am getting close so hang in there…lol

Once I got this guy on the phone he informed me of my actual phone number and that the card was just waiting for the initial handshake to be activated. However their activation server was down and probably would not be fixed until Monday. Not only was he able to walk me through a manual activation, we built a little rapier and I found yet another way to tweak these cards via a terminal, using cntrl T. IDK what any of the commands are in their yet but I am going to find out.

Bottom line:

Because of my trial being canceled in the nick of time, I got two months of service for free, and the refund for my UM150 paid for my Novatel U727 ( which BTW is a much superior card) I am sitting here with 3 bars with no external antenna! I had to use my external Parabolic Grid to get any bars on National Access or Rev-A with a Wilson 3 watt amp. I am still waiting for my antenna adapter to show up and am hopeful to get a much higher Rev-A signal than I ever got with the piece of crap UM150.
No contract, a better card, a good signal with no antenna…..life is good.

After having heard that Verizon was offering wireless data access without a contract, I ordered a Novatel USB720 off eBay. Of course, now that I have it in my hands, I can't get Verizon to deliver on their advertised terms -- two different people have insisted that I need a contract.

Obviously I do not want a contract, because as soon as I sign a contract with Verizon, Cricket is certain to begin offering their service here at half the price. (They have bought some spectrum in the Seattle area, so I assume it's only a matter of time.)

Before I waste any more of my time on these jokers, can someone suggest the actual name and phone number of someone I can call at Verizon who can hook me up? Alternatively, if you know of someone in a Seattle-area Verizon store who has some clue, point me to where I need to go.

Why not just print the press release in the first post or Google to get the article and bring it into a Verizon store. If the sales rep isn't aware, ask for the manager of the store.

Does the month to month account cost the same per month as the 2 year contract ?

Other than paying full retail for the modem, are there any other differences in the startup cost ?
