Maybe he's not counting the digits right, I don't know. I don't think I could use up 2.5 gigs in one day if I tried. Perhaps he's reading 250 megs as 2.5 gigs? He's saying he used 2.5 gigs in an hour...I don't see how that's even possible, |
I don't doubt the numbers if he is downloading software distributions or streaming video/audio. I have satellite and I am capped at 1G/wk .. I regularly hit 1G in a week. Its 142MB/day or about ~12M/hr assuming a 12 hour usage period. It doesn't take long to burn through that much data if you have say a family of 4 using the computer. You can hit it without even streaming video. Especially if you have 4 computers that all decide to "auto update" virus software that is a 40MB download.
I too thought I had a virus so I installed network traffic monitoring software. It turned out some programs were downloading when I didn't expect it. For instance, I had a homebrew PVR application that would attempt to download scheduling information. It would get a partial download and then retry... the retry scheme is what was killing me. It was approx a 10MB download, but it kept erroring and re-executing. It also had a nice display that would give you the current weather, this application would go out and hit the web every few minutes. Neither was a virus, just poorly designed applications.
The biggest problem with all of this is that it takes precious time to be the network bandwidth nazi. I'd rather not have to worry about it. Much like most people that have a fat cable connection or adsl. |

I have 2 PC's a ps3 and a psp plus a two laptops that all run on a KR1 moblie router connected with a sprint connection card.. I even took it connected to my mobile router to colorado in the back of my jeep.... I can hit a 5gb limit in less than a week.. it's not hard.. I can download almost a GB movie off the playstation network.. game updates... software updates.. I could care less about the usage.... 25GB i have to exceed that easily.. with NO FILE SHARING OF ANY KIND
i haven't seen any type of reprimand or any action no letter nothing and as of my last speed test I'm jamming almost 2.5mb down and 400k up.. with 296ms ping....
I'm very happy with the service if they try and change it on me I will just cancel and fight paying the termination fee....I can get 5 times the bandwith without limits from a cable company for the same price....
Sprint is totally missing the boat on this ..... bad business for sure.
Does anyone know the reason for the policy change? I'm sure it related to money.. |

We're off topic.
This thread became a sticky to report only actual monthly excess usage and Sprint reactions. Otherwise it quickly migrates to another general info thread on the cap like the tens of others in this forum.
Please use it to report only excess monthly usage and Sprint reactions. Thx _________________ Vista64 & EX720 |

Here's an on-topic one.
Last billing cycle (about 30 days ago), I think I burned about 10 gigs. Sprint's figures were about 3 gig more. So far, no response at all.
My previous months were very high... guessing 30-40-50 gigs or so (I wasn't metering myself back then.
I have a corporate liable account that was in place before the change.

I read that Sprint sent a letter to a guy, after he went over the stupid cap three months in a row...If that's true, I should be receiving my letter shortly |

Rural customer, which may make a difference in their enforcement, shouldn't, but might.

Invoice period: October 12, 2008 - November 11, 2008

Vision Data Unlimited 11070506 Unlimited --
A few days ago I noticed a huge slow down in my download speeds. I was at a different work location then normal and thought it was that.
Three days later (after at home, and other locations) it was still slow. Speed tests show I'm averaging 50KB/s or lower. Normally I was easily getting 100KB/s (1M). All testing done via speedtest.net at various test locations
Upload speeds appear to have not changed much, just that my download speed has been heavily throttled.
No spyware, no viruses. PC is all up to date etc.
Called Sprint. They essentially have no way to tell if your account has actually been throttled or not. "It's done automatically and they do not inform us if a user is throttled or not".
I'll follow up with this once my billing cycle rolls over to a new one and see if I magically get my speeds back. As of now. It looks like Sprint throttled me down. |

Well if that's true it looks like we're getting the same deal the grandfathered Verizon customers are getting. I can live with that. Just as long as there isn't any change in my bill, and you get your speed back at the beginning of the next billing cycle. |

I was so happy with Sprint that I was going to get me a PDA of some kind with the SE plan for Christmas in addition to the 4 phones I already have with them. Then I found out about the cap about a week ago. Heck I almost cryed.
Plan is from Dec 2006
I had been going way over every month and have not heard nothing yet from Sprint.
I have really cut down on usage now but I will not be able to stay under 5 gigs per month. It looks like I need at least 10 or 12 per month.
If Sprint calls me to "educate" then I will just have to close my accounts and move on and spend my $200 per month somewhere else. |

I'm trying not to go off topic here.... but I sincerely think that my account might be on the radar at Sprint. I got one of the "education" phone calls this summer and then I've stayed under about 10 gigs during the past few months... but I binged this month.
SPRINT'S RESPONSE (possibly?):
Ok, I just got shut off for owing Sprint a measly $55! I paid the bill and got turned back on in about 2 minutes flat. Shame on me.
But gosh, they got a jumpy finger on the "suspend" button these days!
My bill was due 12/5 - and they have me suspended on 12/6. My next bill cuts in 6 days and I'm now paid in full. So this wasn't some 30 days late crapola.
I guess they needed the money, huh?
Now... maybe they're trying to show me the door for being one of the obnoxious users that from time to time really racks up the downloads.
According to the meter I'm running... I'm at about 28 gigs this month - with 6 more days to go. The Sprint site says I'm at 32.
The last I was told by customer service (and one of my favorite geeky guys at the local store) was that accounts like mine (created before that wonky change in July) don't have anything to worry about. Stay tuned. |

If they turned it back on after your bill was paid up, it seems to me the data usage had nothing to do with it. Although, I've been 2 weeks late and never got shut off. |

That's the point... don't you think it's a little odd to suspend the account when it is ONE DAY late?
If the account isn't "bad" in any other way... gotta wonder if those of us that "got educated" might be on a shorter leash these days. |
