| i have all of this extra ethernet cable. assuming i wire it correctly, can i solder on a female usb plug on one end and a male usb plug on the other to extend my wireless usb modem so i can put it upstairs to receive better signal? ever since i moved downstairs i never get above like 21kb/s when i was getting over 100kb/s upstairs. |

Probably a much better (but more expensive) option would be to put an EVDO router upstairs with the modem in it, and use wifi to your computer. That avoids any kind of long cable run.

I believe the theoretical maximum distance for USB is around 16 feet or so.
While I suppose you could use the conductors in a Cat5 cable to carry the USB signal and power pairs, I don't know how well it would work.
I've never taken apart a USB cable to check and see if they are twisted pairs, and if they are, what the rate of twist is to know if it's comparable to Cat5.
When I buy a router in the next couple months, I'm going to put my antenna in the attic, run the coax down into an upstairs closet, and mount the router/modem combo in the closet, and then run a Cat5 cable down to a switch in the laundry room to centralize my network there.

Those USB to Ethernet adapters are actually tiny little USB network cards.
Kinda neat! They just reduced the size of the plastic casing down to almost nothing!
Who knows how stable the drivers are, or if they work with an OS other than windows.
