|
|
I currently have a home network setup with a desktop with wired satellite internet and a laptop all on the same wireless network (D-Link WBR-2310). The satellite internet service is that bad that I went out and got the Verizon USB727 modem which I've been using in the laptop.
I want to get rid of the satellite internet very soon, but I am not sure that the USB727 modem will work with the current home networked desktop and laptop. From what I'm reading, it probably won't and I'll have to either change the router to one with a USB port for the modem -OR- swap out the USB727 modem for another type of card.
Honestly, I really don't even need to have internet on the desktop. So if I kept the modem on the laptop, I (hopefully) could still use the router to network just the desktop and laptop as the desktop has my printers hooked up to it and I'd like to be able to print to them from the laptop.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Paula |

Jim's right that it should be possible to use ICS, but its not likely to be the best solution. It can be a pain to maintain settings, there can be conflicts galore, and neither your computer maker or the router maker will provide tech support for it.
In your case, the CTR350 could be used to "feed" existing system, and many have found the CTR350 as a replacement for their existing router, to be quite satisfactory.

(PS: for $30 more, the CTR500 has lights to indicate EVDO signal received by USB727, a more powerful processor, and more versatility fo future 3G devices) _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas/Routers/Amps :: Verizon EVDO :: Sprint EVDO :: Why Buy from 3Gstore? |

So with this CTR350, are you saying that it would allow me to use the cellular broadband on BOTH computers, the laptop *and* the old desktop?
Okay, dumb question now, but one that keeps nagging at me in regards to having the USB727 plugged into a router at all times, since I see that my current router is "always on". If the USB727 is plugged into a router and the router is always on, is it slowly eating up my 5 GB monthly allowance even if I'm not on it?
Because if that's the case, I'd rather just not have internet on the desktop, keep the USB727 on the laptop, and have the wireless network strictly to share files and printers between the two computers.
Thanks again,
Paula |

yes, exactly. this is a photo of UM150 attached to CTR350, that has ethernet cable running to a desktop pc:
aside from that hard wired connection, the CTR350 can simultaneously allow computers to connect via wifi.
Turning off the router easily eliminates the worry of it slowly consuming your bandwidth.... and FYI, using the router allows for much quicker connection startup than the vzam connection manager. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas/Routers/Amps :: Verizon EVDO :: Sprint EVDO :: Why Buy from 3Gstore? |

| Wow. Cool! So what about speeds? Does this setup affect the speeds at all?? |

depending on connection type, there are even some who swear that using the router makes things faster. mostly because you aren't using carriers 'bloatware' to control connection, but also because cradlepoint uses 'wipipe' hardware optimization for tougher connections like video stream, vpn, voip, etc. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas/Routers/Amps :: Verizon EVDO :: Sprint EVDO :: Why Buy from 3Gstore? |

Great! That actually sounds like the best solution I've heard yet! Thanks, Alex!
So really all I'll need is the CTR350 router and a wi-fi card for my desktop then?? |

| I use the CTR350 and it's the best router I have had. I do not live near a VZW tower but get 1.2 down and 400 up most of the time. I used to have satellite internet and this setup is so much better. You won't go wrong with a Cradlepoint router and don't be fooled by the small size of the CTR350, it more than does the job and it is easy to take with you (like I just did on vacation) for a portable internet solution. |

The 350 works fine and I have one, but for $30 more the 500 is well worth the upgrade. You also get a external antenna port if needed ... _________________ evdo-tips.com |

as for the question you asked about it slowly eating bandwidth...if nothing is used then nothing is "eaten" up
I have a MBR1000 with a Sierra 597e running currently 2 lappys, a HTPC for video streaming via netflix and audio streaming via Rhapsody, my sons desktop who has a webcam running darn near for hours everyday with his girlfirend, and a playstation 3 gaming online
I used 7.6 gb last month and my son downloaded a 1.8 gb demo game on his ps3
I have a seperate internal novatel modem in my lappy which i am considering swapping to a u720 which would enable me to use the load balancing feature of the MBR1000 and give me still 2 mobile cards for the 2 lappys |

From what I'm experiencing, the EV-DO router forces the use of WiFi because the USB modem is plugged directly into the router and not to the PC. Thus cellular mobile broad band dialup is not detected.
Use of a more secure router gives rise to a less secure connection in my estimation. I would rather use the mobile broadband connection directly with ip exposed than be forced to use wifi through the router.
I had been using regular dialup, which can't go through a router, to login to banks, and that was safe through use of firewall, safehex, etc so regular EV-DO should be safe. _________________ Compass 597 |
