|
|
I have been receiving some private emails to have some new dedicated forums for specific groups on EVODforums.com.
The first one noted was for Police Departments
I can think of a few others:
RV'rs
Boaters
These would be dedicated to specific topics and it might help organize our growing boards.
Any other ideas for dedicated forums up here? _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

An "off topic" type of forum? Like our Geckocafe or S.U.s watercooler idea? _________________ EVDO Addict. |

Not really sure why Police Departments would be investing in EVDO equipment. All areas are diffent but mobile technology for law enforcement should run off of a closed system and those users (officers) with mobile data terminals that run ncic and state checks should not have access to the internet on the same computer as a matter of security policy. The NCIC data base and most state regulatory agencies have a policy against the use of the two together.
There are useful websites for law enforcement that provide multiple avenues of investigation but most department will and should invest in the afore mentioned services in lue of internet services in the cruisers. For those department that cannot afford or are not able to obtain grant money for the afore mentioned technology the EVDO may be somewhat helpful but also present safety issues with officers in their cruisers surfing the net. |

| What area, just curious? As a police officer (detective) I frankly just don't see the benifit when there are so many better options, although more expensive for law enforcement. |

A lot of those Sprint EVDO cards you see in police cruisers are probably running Data Link. It uses Sprint's EVDO network but routes all traffic to a specific concetrator. It never touches the Internet and is thus secure inside Sprint's network.
But, insofar as new forums are concerned, I think the current list is pretty adequately covering all the issues that would be discussed in a public forum like this. There are lots of new things I would like to discuss but can't due to NDA or something else. It seems like it's going well, so why change it? |

I would say that you are probably right. It's the same as secure government links going across telco lines.
I was referring to is the Fredericksburg VA area, Semi75. |

Mackie is dead on, the departments/agencies are not using what we think of as normal evdo modems. I guess if you look at it from Michael's standpoint for selling amps and antennas then yes many are using parts and the technology law enforcement is using is the same.
This was amusing that this was brought up because believe it or not our agency while renegotiating the department's wire service they kept trying to sell us EVDO plans for each cruiser. We are talking about s620s for every cruiser and unlimited data plan, that's it. This reseller actually thought that was a good idea for officers to surf the net while in the field and use web mail to email each other information that was too sensitive to radio. While this may have small uses it also limits the data terminal services you can use in the cruiser due to national standards.
Cypane, I am familiar with the service in Fredricksburg VA as well as in Richmond, VA and while it uses the same technology it is not exactly the consumer grade technology. Govt services and LE everywhere have to have their communication services from somewhere just as you said. Imagine trying to start your own data terminal service and placing repeaters across an entire jurisdiction.
In the original post I was thinking you were trying to sell and support LE consumer grade evdo cards and net service. In KY we were lucky in that the state implemented on a uniform standard and provides service state wide also through cell sites and the departments are required to purchase the equipment.
Anyway as far as more forums, I just read the most recent posts anyway |
