Without really offering an explanation, Sprint will be discontinuing its PCS Mail service that has been available to customers of Sprint EVDO data devices.
Sprint has put up a website explaining how customers who currently have *@sprintpcs.com email addresses should pick from one of the more popular free email services like Google or Yahoo:

| I got the same notice today. This has to be a last gasp breath from a desparate company from the bean counting department. What use is broadband wireless internet if you cannot send and receive emails? |

It isn't disabling sending and receiving email, it is giving you yet another email address that probably 98% of mobile broadband users do not use (because they already have an email address via gmail, yahoo or other). _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Maybe you didn't receive the same message I got.
| Quote: | Important message regarding future changes to PCS Mail service.
Dear Valued Customer,
Sprint is committed to keeping you informed of changes to your wireless products and services and providing you with the best solutions to meet your needs.
Our records indicate that you currently use our free email service, PCS Mail. Through our efforts to continually evaluate our offerings, the decision was made to discontinue PCS Mail on December 31, 2008.
To ensure you are prepared for this change and have continued access to your emails, listed below are four recommended steps to take before December 31, 2008:
1. Sign up for a new email account with an email provider
2. Transfer your existing emails to your new email account
3. Save and transfer your contacts
4. Install our free Mobile Email for instant access to your email accounts
Please visit www.sprint.com/pcsmail to learn more about these steps and possible service alternatives.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and look forward to continuing to serve your communication needs.
Sincerely,
Sprint Product Management |

| I am one of those that has used my ***@sprintpcs.com email for EVERYTHING. It will take me days to change to some rinking dink yahoo mail. When my contract is up, I will be dumping SprintEVDO service. Sprint lost more than 900,000 customers last quarter and are apparantly going to go out of business if they can't even provide a customer with ONE email address. Sprint just couldn't hack it in this competitive business. When I called customer service at Sprint tonite - the operator said this was the first she heard of it - Geeeeeeeeeeeze |

I used my @sprintpcs email to send emails without having to log into webmail. I pick up my emails from the pop mail server for my dialup service. Many retailers won't accept these anonymous email accounts to do business. I can't imagine companies and corporations want their business traffic on free yahoo mail accounts.
This decision by Sprint bean counters can't be saving much money either. What does an smtp mail server cost to run? It's a show stopper as far as I'm concerned. I would have to dial up a connection just to send an email.
I've watched bad management make these sorts of decisions before. Typically, they locked up the paper and pencils first. Next it was rationed toilet paper. After that, it was "bring your own". Last, they laid of sales staff, making hard times worse.
That company is gone, sold at fire sale prices. |

That is the only reason I used mine, many trading and selling sites "require" a ISP provided email address to even do business there |

For those who are switching from @sprintpcs.com addresses...I highly recommend Gmail; Google's free email service which provides 7GB (and counting) of free email storage. It's hands-down the best email service available...even better than any pay email service that I've used. Just check out their reviews. |

I don't think you can send emails from gmail without log-on via a web page composition page can you? I didn't see an authenticated smtp interface between gmail and various email programs. That makes it incompatible with Outlook, Mozilla, Netscape and most any email program that requires an authenticated connection to an smtp server. |

Gmail does provide POP3 & IMAP access, and they also provide an smtp server for outgoing mail.

Gmail is definitely the way to go. I've tried several "free" email clients and Gmail is the best and they keep adding improvements. My wife uses Yahoo and that also will work well. One advantage of using an email service like Gmaill or Yahoo is you can switch ISP providers without having to change your email address.

I've been using various cellular internet cards for 5 years.
I've never used any of the @crappyprovider.com addresses.
And I don't check for my mail on slow web sites, either (unless in an emergency of some sort).
Use Outlook or Entourage (mac) and set up a POP 3 account with Gmail. Very little spam, and you can set your email client up to go retrieve your email at whatever interval you choose.
The upside of setting it up this way, is that if you have your email program go out and check for email every 9 minutes or so, your connection stays alive and you don't get disconnected for inactivity 30 times a day. |
