I am currently having mixed results with a Yagi. Sometimes I get an excellent signal and then it wither goes away or has a lot of packet loss. I see some people here having success with a panel antenna and a satellite dish as a signal gatherer. Which is better for fringe areas?

They pretty much both have the same RF pattern. Better than both, depending on terrain, is a grid antenna.

Provided Verizon is at 1900 MHz in your area, this: http://www.hyperlinktech.com/productfamily.aspx?id=295 would be a good choice. Disregard that it is 2.4 GHz rated. It will work just fine. The ribs would need to be rotated up/down instead of left/right as pictured for correct polarization. Just turn the whole thing, feed and all, sideways. This has a very narrow pencil-like RF pattern and would need to be aimed carefully, but the results would be worth it.

There's another one on the same site
Antennas > 900 MHz Antennas > 900 MHz Grid Antennas
marked as "870 MHz" which will almost certainly cover 850 MHz Verizon (or anyone else) similarly well. It looks to already be mounted vertically polarized.
It actually looks like it might be the same reflector but with a different feed.
It should be roughly half as sharp at 850-900 mHz as it is at PCS. It still needs to be carefully pointed though.

ok guys thanks for the input. Now can one of you tell me how to check in Field Test to find out if I am on 800 or 1900? I do see a 1.9ghz test and a 800mhz test going on. Could this mean RevA runs at 1900 and voice at 800?

Right now I have a WildBlue Dish behind my Yagi and it definitely helps a lot. I also removed my amplifier from the system and am get a weaker but cleaner signal

I have an ad in the local paper asking folks if they have an old PrimeStar Dish they want to give up.

Does anyone think that this bigger elliptical dish in combo with my Yagi might be as good or better than the Grid antenna?

[/img]

Sorry for the lousy picture but it is almost dark

I have moved the dish allover and currently it works the best where it is.

I think it probably wouldn't be much different.
If the yagi is more than about 2 elements, it almost certainly has too narrow a beam to make use of the entire dish, whatever it may be.

You will do better substituting a *lower* gain feed (like a dipole and reflector)for the yagi!
