|
|
I just got a letter today from verizon here is a small excerpt:
Your National Access and/or Broadband Access service is scheduled to be disconnected on the above mobile number on 11/14/05. Please contact Verizon Wireless immediately at 866-221-3979.
Unusually high data activity may indicate misuse of service.
So good times, let me tell you. I live out in the country and so of course I use this for my primary isp. And like many of you, have it set up to share with 6 other computers. So of course I have high data activity, but the last time I checked that's why I am on the supposive unlimited plan, which appearently is not unlimited.
Has this happened to anyone else? |

That is odd????? How much data are you using here???? Like the whole tower maybe??? LOL! j/k.... I wonder if there is a disclaimer somewhere with Verizon that prohibits using the service with a remote server set up??
Interesting situation I must admit.... _________________ EVDO Addict. |

Can you share with us a little about your use.
Typical email / browsing?
Did you use an P2P software for sharing?
What has your typical bandwidth used monthly (available in myaccounts at VerizonWireless.com).
How long you have been using Broadband/NationalAccess?
Are you using BroadbandAccess or NationalAccess?
I have not heard of anyone getting cancelled, I have heard (on other boards), of people getting bills for data overage uses (e.g. tethering a phone as a USB modem - someone got a $1430 monthly overage bill). _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

I seen that happen more with Sprint, they have in it their ToS that customers shall not use a vision phone as a modem, unless they (the customer) have a data bundle on their plan. Data usage without a plan is .02 cents a kb then.... _________________ EVDO Addict. |

mostly typical browsing i have download games, but nothing p2p.
there is nothing wrong with downloading games from direct2drive
they are large but how can they say that's "misuse" when it's unlimited
i have had the service for almost a year now.
i can't seem to find where it lists mb downloaded on the verizon's site. it only shows minutes used which of course is 0 min. cause it's data |

Could be that VZW is starting to enforce a new ToS????? This is twlight zoneish here, now where is Rod Sterling to explain the narrative??? I would suggest calling the number given and see what VZW says about it and post your results here.... _________________ EVDO Addict. |

Yes, please keep us posted here on EVDOforums.
I guessed this would happen a few months ago.
As Verizon grows and EVDO takes off, there are more and more people using this shared bandwidth technology. There are 2 ways to expand:
- add more towers & capacity
- kick off abusers
Now, I am not sure the definition of an abuser, but someone that is downloading 3 movies over P2P a day would be considered an abuser (each movie is 2gb+).
I am not accusing you of this, I would like to know what your bandwidth uses have been, as that info will help everyone else here. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

ok my average use is typically less then 10 gig a month
when i called the number they asked me the following questions:
Do you ever download games, mp3s or movies? Yes
Have you ever used this connection for webhosting? No
Do you leave your connection on for an extended period of time? Yes
Then i tried to explain myself and she said you will have a chance to explain yourself when someone calls you back in 7 to 10 days. have a nice day.
on a side note i called sprint and asked if they would ever cancel my evdo if i downloaded 900,000 gig a month he said no. he knows some people download many many gigs a month through aircards but the service is unlimited so it's pefectly fine that people do that. the only issue is people using their handsets connected to their computers and you download a ton then they will catch you and make you pay the 40 dollars a month. but he said absoulutely no cap or restrictions on what you can do with your evdo service. i said even web hosting? he said at this time they have no restrictions on that or anything else. it is UNLIMITED |

Assuming you really aren't doing anything stupid with their service, I'd write your state's DA and lodge a formal complaint about misleading advertising with their "UNLIMITED" all over it and a copy of their letter. That would be free for you to do. You should send the letter to the DA and copy Verizon. Be interesting to see how they repsond to that. Hell, I'd put a CC to this forum in the letter so they know we are all watching.
Oh, and I would warn them that discontinuing your use of "unlimited" service would prompt you also to engage a lawyer for breach of contract. _________________ Victor |

| If it's as you describe and especially after using it for a year, that's pretty shoddy customer relations to do that without even as much a warning. |

Like I said before because of RIAA making their threats to ISPs and P2P sites may be part of reason VZW is taking this action. And to save themselves a legal headache again i.e. V710 settlement. Who knows? If OP gives permission I post this at my board and 5 other boards that I am a member of. I bet that would stir the pot, you think? _________________ EVDO Addict. |

Maybe this is related to illegal music/video download and RIAA.
What software did you use to download MP3s and movies? Also, when installing P2P software, it also automatically shares your download folder - net effect, you are becoming a web server for others to download from you. (unless you disable it).
I wonder if this is related to RIAA threatening Verizon. They would have the IP Address / date / time of the download, and Verizon could easily determine which account downloaded.

I was just thinking.. Verizons terms of service specifically mention support for VPN traffic. Once you have a VPN session open they cannot see any of the traffic (they will only see you connected to your VPN server).
I guess one way to get around this whole thing is to establish a VPN before you do anything. |

Even though, this complaint is just from one person, it really does affect us all and getting to the bottom of what really is going on, only benefits everyone reading (and all future readers too).
So, here is the URL to link directly to this thread:
http://www.evdoforums.com/about1004.html | Cool. I will be a posting tonite. And yes this does affect everyone hence my example of the V710 lawsuit and its settlement. One person will lead to many. Well, for now I can foresee many customers going over to Sprint or Alltel for EVDO service over time cuz of this, you think? _________________ EVDO Addict. |
