A competing technology (is rumored) to be launched by end of 2005. It is called HSDPA and will be launched by Cingular and will compete with EVDO by Verizon and Sprint. There has been much talk about this competing technology.

We don't expect HSDPA to ever catch up to EVDO, but we may launch a sister site to cover HSDPA if Cingular starts deploying this in a big way. Right now, many carriers world wide are testing this newer technology.

| So far it's vaporware. Not saying it won't come but not a single test city, handset, or card. Cingular is massively behind in the 3G. And all of this for real world performance equal to EV-DO or at best slightly faster. |

I actually agree that there is not too much to get excited about. If you read the Infoworld article, it is going to be a lot slower than EVDO AND there is currently NO deployment.
Lets keep an eye on it and see what happens in the next 1 - 2 years.
Given the roadmap for EVDO and the current deployment by Verizon (and almost Sprint), I really don't see HSDPA being much of a competition here in the US.

Cingular has a hodge-podge mess of differing sites and going to HSDPA will literally be a fork lift upgrade for nearly every cell site. It may cost them $10B-$12B to match the coverage of Sprint/Verizon, maybe more.
It will be interesting to see if Cingular can pull this off. If they don't, they'll turn into a low rent voice carrier and not be able to compete in the data space... or VoIP. |

I wonder how much of the "leak" was pure marketing. Verizon getting all the customers and press. Sprint, a few weeks away from some big announcements.
Seems like more of a marketing ploy, let see what really happens.

Goog point.... And message boards help too... As soon as info is released it spreads like a wild fire..... So, in a way I think carriers love the forums and its cheaper for them tooo...

[Cingular announces the initial launch of its HSDPA network in 16 markets providing data speeds between 400-700Kbps on the downlink. Cingular BroadbandConnect subscribers can now purchase either a Sierra Wireless AC860 or Novatel U730 laptop model card to access the network.]
Atlanta -- Cingular Wireless today launched its super-charged wireless network capable of providing customers with high-speed access to information in a world that has gone mobile. Customers can use the third-generation (3G) network to access Cingular BroadbandConnect, which is available to nearly 35 million people in 52 communities throughout the United States. The company will continue to extend the network rapidly next year.
Stan Sigman, Cingular's president and CEO, announced the service at an investor conference in New York City: "Make no mistake about it: Wireless users want the speed and services they've come to expect from their wired connections. And today Cingular is delivering on its promises to provide both the speed and reliability customers need."
Cingular's 3G network is the first widely available service in the world to use HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology. HSDPA is the high-speed evolution of GSM/EDGE (Global System for Mobile Communication/Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution), which shares a common core network. GSM is the world's most popular wireless technology, which is used by more than one billion people in 210 countries.
Cingular will initially launch the BroadbandConnect service in Austin (TX.), Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland (OR.), Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose (CA.), Seattle, Tacoma (Wash.) and Washington D.C.
Cingular BroadbandConnect is a super-charged enhancement to the company's nationwide EDGE network, the nation's largest wireless high-speed data network. When coupled with a compatible device and service plan, the service provides average mobile data connections between 400-700Kbps (kilobits per second) on the downlink and bursts to more than a megabit per second.
BroadbandConnect combines a laptop modem card, Cingular's Communication Manager software and a Data Connect plan for use on laptops. Customers can use their laptops to access the Internet or e-mail, download large files and attachments, and run corporate business applications at broadband speeds in areas covered by BroadbandConnect. The service also offers additional security features compared to alternative wireless technologies. Additional devices and exclusive services that take advantage of the high-speed HSDPA network, such as transmitting full motion video and providing ultra-fast audio, will be available in 2006.
Unlike services offered by some wireless companies, BroadbandConnect does not drop a session when the user is outside the coverage area. Cingular said the laptop modem cards are dual-band HSDPA/UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone System) (850/1900Mhz) and backward compatible with EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) in four bands (850/900/1800/1900Mhz), so the session is seamlessly transferred to the company's nationwide EDGE network or a data network of one of its roaming partners.
Customers can purchase either a Sierra Wireless AC860 or Novatel U730 laptop modem card for $99.99, after rebate, when they sign up for a qualifying voice plan and introductory two-year $59.99 Unlimited Data Connect plan. A variety of monthly data plans are available starting at $19.99 for 5 MB.
An updated version of Cingular Communication Manager is included with the laptop modem cards. The software gives customers the flexibility to connect to BroadbandConnect, EDGE, GPRS or public and private Wi-Fi hotspots.
BroadbandConnect uses HSDPA/UMTS technology, the global standard and natural 3G evolutionary path for GSM providers. Wireless carriers offering UMTS, EDGE or GPRS can upgrade their networks to HSDPA and be assured there is a continued evolutionary path to faster speeds and more advanced services.
"HSDPA/UMTS gives us the singular advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services to our customers. For businesses and consumers, this means more feature rich services and content," said Kris Rinne, chief technology officer for Cingular. "It also provides a lower cost method for carrying traffic and more efficient use of spectrum."

Following up on my last comment, it appears that Cingular has no choice but spend the big bucks to keep up. They can probably afford it but that's a big hit on the books and they may need to stretch the rollout over 3 years... 15 markets this year, 100 by next year and small markets the 3rd year. I don't think they'll have problems getting/maintaining the user-base even if further behind because EDGE is a little faster than 1xRTT and is still quite usable.
Consider Sprint's user-base of 1xRTT laptop cards upgrading to EVDO. It's an instant userbase upgrade and suddently you have enough users to sustain it. We've had over 100 Sprint xRTT cards and 20+ Verizon cards rolled out. We simply negotiated to replace to EVDO cards for free when renewing the contract. Cingular can catchup similarly by upgrading their EDGE users but they are going to have to price better than EVDO if performance is not up to snuff.
Competition is good. Maybe one of the players will take the dive for $40/month service sooner than later. |

I received my Sierra Wireless 860 UMTS/HSDPA card today, but have yet to install or test it. A representative from Cingular in Dallas Texas sent the card to me for testing with the Digital Antenna DA4000 and the Wilson 812201 dual band inline amplifiers.
I will follow up with the results as soon as I have an opportunity to perform the test. |

| I'd be interested in the results of ping times to various sites when you get your card going. That might be a slight edge over EVDO. I typically see 200-400ms depending on site and location conditions and sometimes get 180ms. HSDPA users are reporting 130-200ms fairly consistently. |

| I’m curious about ping times too, as well as your feedback on coverage. It looked to be pretty small in Minnesota (though I can’t find maps on their site today, must have had a link from somewhere else in this forum before). Maybe you’re not testing here? |

In Rochester the HSDPA is not being supported so I will be taking my notebook to the Minneapolis St Paul area this weekend.
