Hello,

This is just a heads up. We had a client that wanted to combine their Verizon bills into one account. To do this, they needed to use the Verizon EZMove program, to get a new phone number for their data card and then combine verizon cell phone and data card on the same bill. It is free to do this (just the time on the phone with Verizon).

After doing this move, their data card "seemed" a lot slower than before. They tried all the same spots for a week and it never was fast like it was before.

Finally, after calling Verizon, they found the problem. While doing the EZMove, the new account was setup as NationalAccess vs. BroadbandAccess (the account was previously BroadbandAccess). So, every time, they connected, even though they were in a BroadbandAccess, they were only getting NationalAccess. After Verizon fixed the problem, the speed returned.

So, IF you want to combine your bills, MAKE SURE they do not switch your account plan accidently.

I guess there is some interest in this topic, we got a few emails since posting it.

After doing the Verizon EZMove, all you need to do is run the Activation option on the card to have it automatically re-program with the new number. After doing the Activation, your new number will show up in the About Box.

FYI, the new phone number will not show up in the About Box, until your Quit and relaunch VZAccess.

So the steps are:

- Do EZ Move with Verizon
- Run Activation Wizard
- Quit and relaunch VZAccess
- You should see your new phone number in the About Box of VZAccess

Another Verizon screw up.

Verizon does the EZMove and then the customer is on NationalAccess (1xRTT) only.

It takes calling Verizon back after the EZMove and telling them, to put you back on the BroadbandAccess plan and re-run Activation.

Didn't the device have some type of indication that distinguished the signal between 1xRTT and EVDO? (not justifying Verizon's messup)

That doesn't matter.

If they flag your account as NationalAccess, that is all you will get, even if you are in a BroadbandAccess area.

We had 2 of these happen today.

Customer gets card from us, everything is working great.

Customer wants to combine bills, so they call Verizon to do an EZMove.

During the move, the Verizon Rep sees that they are on the $59.99 plan and assumes that they are on the NationalAccess and flags their account as NationalAccess. Why do they do this? It used to be $79.99 was Broadband and $59.99 was National. The person doing the EZMove sees "59.99" and assumes NationalAccess and incorrectly flags the account and now it goes much slower than it did before.

FYI, the "that doesn't matter" refers to the indicators in VZAccess, NOT your post.

vzaccess will tell you what your coverage is. when you connect it doesn't tell you what the service level is.

best bet is to do a speedtest. if your downstream <144k, then you're getting 1x speeds.

Michael is correct. If they take your broadbandaccess plan and put a nationalaccess only 59.99 plan, suddenly you're getting 1xRTT.

When I became aware of the existence of EVDO a year and a half ago, Michael was already running this board. He has enough experience with the subject to be respected where he speaks.

Here's another potential little gotcha:

One of our customers did an EZ move and found that he could no longer connect to his VPN. Turns out that his VPN was configured to only allow inbound connections from a unique IP address, in this case a static IP address he had setup with Verizon when we first got him connected with his EVDO card. (This is a service Verizon offers, there is a $500 one-time setup fee... Sprint doesn't have static IP service, but they have DataLink)

Turns out that the static IP service is tied to the mobile number of the device NOT the ESN. So... swap in a new device/ESN and the static IP service remains intact. Do an EZ Move, which changes your mobile number and WHOOPS, lose your static IP service.

Our customer did NOT have to pay the $500 static IP setup fee again. In some cases a new IP address may have to be assigned if the original gets re-assigned.
