Hmm, what was all of that stuff I did before computers? What is that thing called sweat?

THIS IS GOING TO SUCK........I just activated with alltel about 2 weeks ago..I have to have unlimited.....5 gig is nothing companies that restrict access stand in the way of the internet..they do not help it. I don't have satellite because of restrictions...WHEN ARE RURAL USERS GOING TO GET A BREAK......we have been taken advantage of for so long. It is time to get a movement going to put an end to bandwidth restrictions..maybe
the FTC and FCC would help us.......not...lol.javascript:emoticon('Evil or Very Mad')

If you (and others) have to have unlimited, there are commercial satellite services and T1 line options and even WISPs in some rural areas. They will charge you more but so goes the saying, you get what you pay for.

There reallly are commercial services (satellite) that will not throttle you like WildBlue or Hughes, but you'll pay around 250/month to be a band hog and will still have the latency issue to deal with.

What's going to really be interesting is what the Verizon guy is going to do to Chad in the Alltel commercials. Smile

Seriously, though. I'm willing to give Big Red a shot if they allow me to void my contract. I'm in the unfortunate boat of living in the boonies where EVDO is my only option and Alltel was the only EVDO with bearable rates.

What's going to happen now is Verizon is going to forget about us "little people" and pay more attention to the metro areas as Verizon barely has cellular service here much less EVDO.

I used to check on Alltel's news all the time. Was a little worried when they were bought out, but now... I HATE Verizon. I don't know what's going to happen when they merge, as I have 2 Alltel phones and an EVDO card (which I love and love the coverage.). I've loved the service, customer service, and pricing for years, but now... I'm sorry: THIS SUCKS. I agree with a prior poster: our unlimited BW is now going to be capped. And since I use some major up/downloading, I'm going to have to try to get out of the contract. They'll have to honor the contract I have now for phones, which I'll need to drop minutes and other text type features to get a nice low price, before picking them back up when VZ takes over, but the EVDO? Can ANYONE honestly believe that they'll continue to give us unlimited?

I also agree with the sentiments of others abouts Verizon taking over, Alltel just in the last couple of weeks finally 'fixed' a tower that I get signal from so now I Finally am getting reliable EVDO which is nice. Cable TV/Internet isn't available for me either, the area I live in is a spread out community so it would cost them to much to up grade what is here, also I don't like the idea of getting satellite TV/Internet just because of all the equipment that would need to be purchased when I have a good chuck of change tied up now so I can get a good signal.

I guess the only good I can see in this whole thing is my 2 year contract is due to expire in January or February, so if Verizon turns out to be all we Alltel customers heard they are then I won't be stuck with them too long without being able to do something about it; but I'm not sure if I want to go to AT&T either, if their coverage isn't any better than it was with Cell One, it could be like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire... So to speak. I didn't like Cell One's customer service so...

5 Gig Cap? Of course. How can they possibly acquire Alltel users put thm under VZW and not do otherwise. They might keep the circle thingie though but I remember when Cingular bought AT&T they pretty much dumped AT&T stuff and stuck a usage penalty on us old TDMA users until we either got a new GSM phone or quit. I quit. Still have the old phone though. Even though I can't get ANY signal on it anymore lol.

I think you have things backwards. At&t bought out Cingular/Cell One not the other way around.

Huh? Unless I am indeed mistaken, I believe Cingular did buy At&T wireless and changed the system from AT&T's TDMA to Cingular's GSM. But they did change Cingular's name to AT&T.

But whichever way it went I thought it was the PITS. Roaming went to crap, coverage areas under TDMA dwindled down to nothing, calls dropped, quality was awful and they stuck it to you on the bill with extra fees on top of it all. And now it's totally shut of and gone.

Thought this was interesting. Too bad Alltel wasn't successful in their attempts to buy Sprint. The article also briefly talks about why Alltel didn't go after any of the 700 Mhz spectrum.
