There's no great conspiracy. Equating this to $4 gas is funny. Truth is we are now paying for generations of no new refineries or drilling in the US due to environmental lobbying. Now we are getting what we asked for, being totally dependent on exports for oil and gas. The difference now is other countries are developing and compete for oil, hence new supply and demand scenarios. With EVDO, the reason only a few have posted here about it is because the vast majority will never see 5 GB per month of use. The company's view of normal use is 180 degress opposite of the super users running servers, downloading movies, streaming 24/7, etc. The difference is they own the company so their view of "normal" will prevail. If a very small percentage of users take up "abnormal" bandwidth, in their view, it makes total economic sense to throttle that use and make room for their "normal" users, thereby saving themselves extensive upgrade costs to keep up with demand. Pure supply and demand economics, which is how successful companies run their businesses.

I understand. I read in an article that the number of EVDO users jumped 125% in the last year, so I suppose at some point either limits have to be imposed, or the network has to be upgraded to keep up. Hopefully Wimax will solve this. In the meantime, we're just screwed. I imagine Alltel is going to get the flood of Sprint refugees, and in a month or two they'll just impose a cap too. I've switched carriers twice now, this 5 gig cap issue keeps following me around like a bad penny. If they enforce it, hopefully they will just throttle us down to 200 mbps like verizon does to it's grandfathered customers, it sucks, but it's a compromise I could live with. I can still do what I need to do at that speed.

While I wrote this, I'm at home on my cable modem downloading 20 minute flash videos, each one is 150 megs. It's taking me about 60 seconds for each one. ONE of them would put me almost at the daily limit when this cap starts...sad.

How did we ever survive before:

automatic transmissions
computers
flash videos
computer games

We were just uninspired life forms bumbling around looking to eat and reproduce.

Now we have purpose in life:
High Speed Pursuits
16 hours of day of reading email and reopening the same web pages
Watching other people have fun and live life through our computer screen
Participating in violence and destruction in a safe environment

Is it any wonder that these superior aliens from outerspace have big heads, big eyes and scrawny bodies?

It hasn't been until recent human history that one could even own a horse. Then practically in one generation man went from owning horses to cars and airplanes. For over 60 years, man has known that using fossil fuels will consume a valuable resource yet corporate America seems to have this never-ending desire to just use it all up in one lifetime. Strange that in this country, all alternatives to fossil consumption are being fought and shutdown. Tell me it's not a conspiracy again. Are the big-headed scrawny people going to rescue us? Because if they don't, doesn't look like anybody else will. I for one advocate sending the suv-driving Sierra Club lawyers to the Arctic to feed the starving Polar Bears. I'd like to see how they like to "hug" bears in the first person. Refineries have been shutdown and no replacements have been built in years, basic economic law, squeeze supply and watch demand drive up the value. Again, please tell me it's not a conspiracy? Put a cap on the EVDO, and watch the users beg and pay more, basic economics 101. Wimax is not a solution for rural areas, it'll never happen.

How many years did it take to break-up ma Bell? Now she's back with a vengence!

Hey, the more I dig into this the more it looks like a conspiracy. At&T recently won the bid for a huge alotment of the 700mhz band from the fcc. WiMAX is mostly 1900ghz, 2.4ghz and up to 11ghz, but...there's discussion on implementation for 700mhz (mostly Verizon and AT&T). Also, WiMAX uses cdma protocol and some other stuff. A lot of this other stuff is proprietary and requires a license fee just to read about it, I'm still digging as somewhere it's got to be public. Anyway, there isn't a whole lot of bandwidth out of a 700mhz signal, this might explain why the cap got invented and why the advertisements seem to focus on texting and online shopping, stuff that won't take up bandwidth and also stuff that's easy to charge separately for. It's also stuff that soho users would have little to no interest in. Sprint must have ideas towards using the 1900ghz band for this same market (or why the cap?). Best guess is they want room for texters and shoppers so they can compete with the other 2. Only, 1900ghz doesn't work that well at penetrating structures and forest, but has several factors more bandwidth. Another problem is the higher frequencies should interfere with vsat, actually the reverse as the rooftop antenna's are directional the satellites beam isn't. So satellite users may start having problems as WiMAX usage grows. Fcc may cut back on where Satellites can beam, and the birds may have issues receiving signals from users. L-band is 390-1.55ghz (GPS, sat phones, commsat), S-band is 1.55-5.2ghz(usually radar and your microwave oven, XM&Sirius, weather sat), C-band is 3-7ghz (GEO, cable tv adn sat tv) Ku-band is 11-18ghz (tv network & commsats) X-band is 8-12ghz (miscellaneous comsats) I think wildblue and starband are Ku and broadcast around 11ghz, but not sure.

One of the things I don't quite get is: WiMAX is supposed to be "anytime, anywhere" and "long distance hi-speed, hi-bandwidth" and then it goes into a range of 30 miles and talk about cell towers. So how does "anytime anywhere" apply to 32 miles from the nearest cell tower?

So, I can only conclude that at this point is looks like Sprint wants to compete with AT&T/Verizon for the teenagers to text on Sprint phones so Daddy can get stuck with the bill. And screw the soho's who have been their main bread&butter users. This screwing is also going to hurt other markets such as gps and sat coms and the phone companies obviously don't give a damn!

To make it painful for Sprint, we should quit as coon as it's convenient to do so.

This is really immature, but I feel very taken advantage of by Sprint since they marketed to me with the "unlimited" offer. After spending money on the modem that I will never get back plus the frustration of having to buy another card from AT&T and using their service now, I am using my card to give Sprint a little extra usage that they so hate...

Assuming that we cannot be grandfathered in for unlimited data usage. I'll cancel since I signed up for the unlimited usage.

At 5GB capacity, I might as well go to AT&T... this way I get equal or slightly faster speeds (3G area) and more importantly, can use the pc card when I travel to Asia.

Also I just got my bill stating the 30 day T&C change.

Given that there are some people posting regarding being grandfathered and others saying not. Are we still up in the air regarding this?

It's really annoying when people act like it is some sort of crime to use an unlimited service in an unlimited fashion. Maybe I'm misreading your post, if so, I apologize - I mean no disrespect. But mocking people just because you don't understand the way they choose to live their lives seems pretty low, imo.

If we want to cancel our MBB plan due to the change in T&C, do we cancel by going into a store or over the phone?

I would cancel if the 5GB cap ends up affecting me. When I first got the unlimited plan, Sprint billed it as Broadband Speeds for watching videos and other bandwidth intensive things. So, they advertised unlimited data, on a high speed network and didn't anticipate that A) people would use it for what they advertised for and B) people liked it and they added many subscribers. Now they claim we're bandwidth hogs, and too many people bought broadband cards.

How did they not see this coming?

I've decided I won't cancel mine until the end of the agreement in 2010. My account remains unlimited until then, no change. Then I will reassess my alternatives and go from there. I'll continue to use it while it remains unlimited. I've receive no notice in change of service and/or TOS and have been told the same so until there is a change I'll continue on my merry way. Wink I don't sweat what might be, only what is.

Interesting post, because I have not gotten anything in the mail either. My wife got our bill yesterday, unlimited with unlimited megabytes. So, where is the cap?
