But, it makes perfect sense. It would also explain my sudden slow-down in speeds as I live less than 3 miles from the tower and as I stated in another topic, I was practically right next to the tower (RSSI -51) and the speeds didn't change.

I'm going out of town this weekend to a couple of larger cities, I'll test the connection then to see if it's either a: my computer (which it's not), b: the tower, or c: Alltel as a whole.

...I'm leaning on C.

I have been pretty happy with Alltel. The internet has just gotten better.

Now, I do live in Arkansas and that might be a plus since Alltels home state is Arkansas. I would think it is your tower and the number of people using that tower. I guess you will find out this weekend. I hope you will lets us know the outcome. There may not be enough T-1's provided to the tower to handle all the users on the tower. The only problem with tower congestion is you would think you would be the sole user from time to time. Do you ever break 500kb down anymore?

Are you using a router, sled, or the usb adapter?

I've never had to call tech support. Well, me being a network technician helps, but this website has been plenty helpful - especially when you guys don't jump all over the backs of the new people who may act a bit naive at times.

I've recommended this site to tens of people who basically have EVDO as their only internet solution.

Well, I went to read your old posts to see if I might be able to figure out something to help you, and I found your old post. Seeing you are a "network technician" it is probable a waist of time for me to try to help you. You probable know more than enough to trouble shoot your problem.

I do have to ask if these 10's of people are in your local area. ----> "I've recommended this site to tens of people who basically have EVDO as their only internet solution." That could load down your tower if you are in a rural area. Especially if the towers have limited T-1's.

on a side note about the 10s of people. I started recommending alltel evdo to some of the people in my area because there is practically nothing else but I stopped because I have had alltel for about 2 years and have slowly seen my speeds decrease. So if they arent gonna add capacity to the towers Im not gonna help them add customers. Its kinda bad when at 4am I consistently get 1600 down and during the day 400-600 and sometimes pretty sluggish response. Lately though it has been pretty decent, though I am still anxiously awaiting revA.

More fun with Alltel's busted internet this morning.
It appears that something they are doing with their router configurations is causing some Apple Software Updates to fail. The failure is a download error which isn't present during a web browser or wget download, so it's pretty difficult to track down. None of my hardware or software has been changed recently, so Alltel's constant messing around is the most likely source.

Most definitely a tower issue. Right now, I'm in another city (a much larger city) and according to antennasearch.com, I'm 2.71 miles from the nearest Alltel tower. Quicklink Mobile is reporting 1.7 Mbps whereas at home I can get a few feet from the tower and not get even half that.

I know the "tens" part sounds weird to say, but it would have been a complete overexaggeration to say "hundreds".

This site (like most sites of this nature) is a gift and a curse in the fact that the people here are incredibly helpful but at the same time like 75% of the topics are either complaints or problems and most of the people I told of EVDO in general think that for the cost the risk of trouble is too high.

I may know quite a bit about routers, switches, ethernet, etc; but, cellular/EVDO is a completely different beast.
