For those who haven't seen this -- I was browsing over at alltel.howardforums.com and ran across these tidbits:
| cclay25 wrote: | | Rev.A may be coming to an Alltel tower near you soon. |
And
| cclay25 wrote: | | Testing is for all intents and purposes complete. Rev.A hardware is already installed on a couple thousand cell sites and is just waiting for the backend prep to be complete. Emporia, KS* however, is not part of the intial Rev.A upgrade. |
cclay25 is pretty darn knowledgeable about Alltel's network goings on so I'm hoping this means we can have our own stickied "Rev. A sightings" thread soon. Although "a couple of thousand cell sites" doesn't give me much encouragement here in Lynchburg, VA. |

| from what I understand from the tech in my nearby town, smaller cities won't be seeing rev a. I don't know how much to put into that, but it's the only lead I have so far. She compared it to Greenville, SC getting Rev. A, while a town as small as Barnwell, SC not getting the update. |

Well, since Lynchburg, VA is larger than Greenville, SC - maybe there's still hope, karlyn. |

| Hopefully, being on Interstate 80 will trump being a smaller town when it comes to Rev A, or else we'll get jacked around. Of course, maybe Alltel should actually fix the unstable connection here before going Rev A. I hope this new tower does the trick, but I'm not holding my breath any longer. |

I hope South Ga is in that equation.
mine has worked good until recently, and has started to fluctuate quite a bit.
hopefully thats them testing rev A.
I need it so badly right now. |

I'm in Manhattan, Kansas, and have noticed recently my rev.0 bandwidth has shot up quite a bit (before I was lucky to hit 1.5Mbps, now 1.8-2.0Mbps seems to be the norm). Perhaps Alltel has added an extra T-carrier or two to the towers in anticipation of greater bandwidth demands due to a rev.A rollout? A guy can hope, at least.
Latency also seems to be better as well, I averaging about 250ms now instead of 400ms. Is the latency improvement from rev.A due to tweaks on the back end, or some change in protocol between the modem and the tower? Because I'm using a RAZR V3m, which is not rev.A compatible, yet I seem to be reaping the benefits of rev.A latency. This leads me to suspect it must mainly be due to network tweaks on Alltel's end. |

| check your ping from the command prompt and don't rely on online speedtest sites. |

| 250 ms latency is typical for rev 0. I typically get around 200. You'll see better than that with a good signal on rev A. |

| So do I, but right now I'm just wondering if they will get it to work. Or if it will ever be installed. I've lost all faith in Alltel. I liked them better when I just had phones through them. |

I think I'm getting messed up with the terminology. Latency is time it takes a packet to reach it's destination, and ping is "round-trip" time, correct? I guess my previous post should have used ping instead of latency, sorry for the confusion.
From the command prompt pinging Google used to take about 350ms I believe, now it's about 200ms. That means 100ms latency through a rev.0 modem. |

I know how to check Wikipedia.
The point that you guys seem to be missing is that latency (whatever type is being measured, be it there-and-back or just there) is much lower than before. |

I do have Rev A here in the middle of nowhere in Northern Michgan. The town I live closest to has a population of about 350. The nearest "big" town is 40 miles away with a population of 10,000. So, I guess I'm trying to say, don't give up hope..there's absolutely no logical reason why I have it here |
