I recently exchanged by U727 (which crapped out) for another one, and installed SmartView when I received the warranty replacement. First, I could not activate it (either using SCM on a windows machine or SmartView on either my Mac or Windows PC). Then, I was able to activate it on my Mac, but could not maintain a connection for more than about 20 seconds without getting a "device unplugged" error and losing power. This went on for about 3 days.
Finally, today, after much gnashing of teeth and discussions with Sprint, it seems to work under SmartView and, interestingly, recognizes the device now in the Mac network pane - allowing me to connect either via the Network pane or SmartView. Very odd.
In any case, so far the Smartview seems to work just fine but doesn't seem to add much to the experience. It does, however, allow me to use either USB port which was an issue previously.

Also, one thing we have noticed at our warehouse....
It is taking longer to activate cards once we process them in Sprint's system. You know that message that says, it can take up to 4 hours before your can activate your card? At times, it really does take time. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Is GPS functionality somewhat more limited with this connection manager?
I am connected in Canada. With the old Sprint connection manager (not the Novatel-specific one), I used to get a message that Sprint Location Based Services were not available in my area, but that it would try something like a "fall-back" service, which I assumed just meant basic GPS tracking. With the new connection manager, I just get a message that Sprint LBS is not available in my area, and that's it.
Plus, the old connection manager had a setting so that the GPS could be used by other applications. I can't seem to find a similar setting with the new SmartView.
Also, does anyone know if it's possible to have more than one Sprint connection manager installed? e.g. could I try out the Novatel one without affecting my SmartView? |

I had the same problem with my AC595 and the old SCM when I tried using NDIS (instead of DUN). I could connect only if I disabled the NIC to my home network. In the end, I gave up and went back to DUN. |
Hi, first post here. I got a lot of info from this forum and decided to go with the new Compass 597 modem and Sprint service. The connection has been great but I found that when I tried to hook up to my local LAN, I was met with the same "An external connection is already present" error. I called sprint tech support and at first, he told me there is no way around this except to disconnect my LAN. I figured there must be and pressed the issue. Finally he 'remembered' that I could set this up through a DUN. Now for those who are not as so hip to setting these EVDO modems up with a DUN (Dial Up Network), such as myself, here are the steps:
1.) Go to control panel, then network connections.
2.) Click to create a new connection to the internet.
3.) For the number to dial, use #777. When it asks for a username and password, leave them blank.
4.)Once the setup wizard is done, click DIAL to connect. Make sure you are not already connected through Smartview or you will receive an error about the port being open.
If the Gods are smiling on you, a balloon should pop up notifying you that you are now connected at 115 Kbps. Don't worry though, your actually connected at the same speeds as you would be through Smartview. You may now resume use of your personal LAN and the connections will not interfere with eachother. This would also allow you to share your internet connection with other computers, but I'm not sure if Sprint would like that. |

I wasted hours trying to ICS my other laptop before I realized something with Sprint was preventing it, not complications with computer settings.
Went into SmartView, disabled default WiFi option, disabled 2 rules that disconnected all other connections. ICS internet sharing easy and fine now. |

Gilevans,
Did you ever solve your problem, where OSX asks for a password? I'm having the same problem with this card and can't solve it no matter what I do. Spent 2 hours on the phone with tech support, and I don't know what else to do. Tech support thinks it may be a hardware error and that I should return it, but I suspect that I'll have the exact same problem.
Any ideas? _________________ vz-usb720-OSX |

I use a Pantech PX-500 with a KR1 router. In order to keep the cards firmware up to date I've had to periodically update the SCM software on a laptop and plug the card in to it, even though I don't usually use card in laptop.
Question: Should I upgrade SCM software from Pantech PX-500 Connection Manager Software 3.02.036 to Sprint SmartView software 1.13.0010.0? Does the new SmartView software update the card's firmware? I don't use the connection manager software for connecting since the PX-500 is usually in a KR1. Would I gain anything from this? |

I have both installed on my Toshiba Satellite and the only thing I see from time to time is that the PRLs are different so it updates the PRL when I switch from one app to the other. I have problems running my ICS when I use smartview because it thinks my home WiFi belongs to Sprint and it's tries to force me to use it for my broadband, which I don't have a WAN side setup. _________________ Denny |

|
|
I purchased my Sierra AC595 PCMCIA card a few days ago and the CD that came with it installed Sprint Mobile Broadband - Sierra 3.05.004 (Connection Manager). I am in a fringe location and even though inside my home, the signal strength is 1 bar -109 dBm, it still connects me to the Rev A service.
Tonight while reading in these forums I saw a reference to the Sprint SmartView software so I downloaded the current version from the Sprint website, installed it (it took forever) and when I tried to run it it shows 0% Signal and -125 dBm and refuses to light the "Connect" button (while the laptop is sitting in the exact place I get a signal with the other connection manager).
If I go outside with my laptop, the SMB 3.05 Connection Manager gets 2-3 bars and -90 dBm signal and in the same spot, the SmartView shows a 10-20% and around a -100 dBm signal and it will allow me to connect outside.
Why do the different Connection Managers get different signals with the card in exactly the same spot? |

Yes, this is still happening for me, and I would guess quite a few others. Is there a resolution to this problem?
-- To recap, the problem is: SmartView continually asks for the admin username/password when you hit the "connect" button. Even after answering this request properly, SmartView will not connect you. Like another poster, I have VMware Fusion installed. I'm not sure if this is related or not.-- |

|
|
So I tried using the PAM option on my Pro 700. I want to eventually get a Cradlepoint and plug in the Sanyo phone.
I got my USB cable (what a pain to find!!), plugged it in to my Win XP laptop, and set it up, both with and without SmartView (the new Sprint Connection Software).
I am in a 5 bar area, with great EVDO Rev A coverage (San Diego, CA). My download speed (dslreports.com/stest (flash test)) was only in the 600-800 kB, and my upload speed was in the 290-350 kB speed. Download speed looked suspect, so I looked for slow downs.
Turns out that the modem driver (bundled with Sprint SmartView) is hard coded for a cap of 230400 (i.e., there is no option in the pull down menu for 460800 or 921600, the max Win XP speeds).
Any thoughts on how to provide for a cap that includes 921600 as an option? Registry edit? Modem driver hack/update?
Thanks in advance to all. |

|

I managed to get Smartview to work with my Pantech PX500. Smartview did a couple of updates to my firmware and itself. I cannot run any other connection manager now. Overall I see it as a Vista like "upgrade" and hate it. Certainly it is much prettier, but where is the pit bull like connection grabber? With the old software there was an auto reconnect button. As I traveled my connection would be lost and regained automatically. Now I have to click that pretty yellow CONNECT button and acknowledge the timeout when it fails only to click CONNECT again until I get hooked up. this should be automatic.
Other than that I see no problems with the new software other than it cannot scale below its 100% size. I would like to see full view with 75% or 50% of full size.
Overall? Sprint blew it, the time to make it pretty was not worth the loss of automatic connection seeking.
New subject: when you manually connect without the Sprint Smartview (in the XP connection window) how can you tell if you are or are not roaming? |
