I disagree. The PDF is for the same version number that the SCM is. Incidentally, while the OS X SmartView is currently at version 1.81.x, the WinXP/Vista version is currently at 1.12.x
Here are screenshots showing the Update PRL and Update Firmware buttons greyed out when disconnected and connected.

Also, you incorrectly state in your write-up that Mac users have never had the ability to activate their cards or use GPS software natively prior to SmartView. Sprint originally released support for both features on Nov 8th, '07.

No, it doesn't work as expected but you can get it to work. To connect, you have to go into the Windows Network Connections and connect via the data card modem driver.
Not acceptable, but a work around. Otherwise use SCM 3.x.
Come on Sprint. Test this with VMWare. |

Are you running on the host, or inside a VM?
We have a "protect thy host" rule here, so we have our U727 diabled in the host (ie: the host is never allowed to have a direct connection to the internet, without passing though a router with NAT, firewalls, and so forth).
If we are using the SCM, we do it from inside a VM setup as a proxy server, and let the other VM's get thier network feed from the proxy VM.
Anyway, again, it would be nice to know if you are running from the host, or form inside a VM.

Assuming Sprint tech support didn't already think of this, this method might work:
1) shut down your system then physically remove your card
2) reboot then go to System Utilities > Networking and delete all connections that use your Sprint card
3) start the Sprint SmartView Application then reinsert your card

Yeah, I should clarify. The SCM works INSIDE an image but not on the host. Just the presence of VMWare on a host won't allow the new SCM to work (on the host). It's a conflict with the VMWare network adapters on the host. If you disable the VMWare virtual NICs at the host, the new SCM works. I need it to work at the host layer.
But the old 3.x SCM works fine with no issues. |

Our tech department had one customer have this issue, so it isn't common or widespready - but they did get them past the problem and all is well. |
Turns out I did buy my Sprint card from you guys and I just got off the phone with your tech support...and they had no clue how to fix it either.
What made you think that they did? |

the new software renders me incapable of connecting now. Where can you download the old software? if you goto sprint it only allows you to download the new one.
I need the old software badly!! Thanks. |

Yep...we tried that...didn't work. One thing I didn't try, though, was deleting the Sprint Card port, then installing the software, rebooting, and inserting the card. I might give that go today if I'm feeling masochistic. |

Go to sprint.com/downloads. then choose your operating system from the drop down menu and press select. This will bring up a list of all software available. |

| I've never had a problem with the old SCM or the new SCM (before they "upgraded" to SmartView). SmartView does not work AT ALL. I uninstalled everything, removed all network adaptors, rebooted, etc. etc. but basically I can click on the CONNECT icon as many times as I want, but it never connects. It acts as if the CONNECT button is not even really a button. When I hover my mouse over it, it doesn't even light up. When I click it does nothing. Sprint tech support was useless. They basically told me to go back to the old SCM. I did that, and the old SCM works fine. Vista x86 with Novatel u720 is my platform. |

| ^Are you using VMWare? That is exactly the behavior I get with VMWare host installed. I have to disable the VMWare virtual adapters on the host to get it to work. |

I tried smartview in a VM, and it updated the firmware and PRL file for my U727. I was happy about that
I was a bit scared that it would brick the U727 (a lot of warnings came up about that, and there was a lot of VM connects and disconnects during the process).
I dislike the smartview software. It seemed clunky, slow, and provided far too much control management for two many connection types I do not use (or already control via other means).
Then again, I am special case user. For the most part, I connect via a router, and only use the connection software for debugging, updating, and informational purposes. In rare cases, I connect to through a VM, then serve the internet to other VM's via a software based proxy server.
I also never let a direct internet connection happen on my host (protect thy host is the rule here), so there is no way I am going to install the new software outside of a VM.

I totally agree with this post. When I saw that Sprint had a new connection software called Smartview being touted here I downloaded and installed it with high hopes. I like the look of the new software but that's about it. It seems like the only time it works is when my laptop has been booted up for about an hour, otherwise the connect button is either not active, or I keep getting an error message that it can't detect my Novatel EX720 card like it isn't plugged into the Express Card slot. I uninstalled the software today and am going back to the old standby - SCM version 3.10.014. I run Vista Ultimate on a Toshiba P105-S9339 laptop that's about a year old at this point. I'm going to wait until they update this POS a couple of times before I take the leap again! |

I installed this today, and it worked fine with a U720.
Took forever to install though, but my new firewall could be a part of that... |

OK, how very strange. When I try to schedule a new Appointment in Microsoft Outlook, I am getting a box that says Windows is trying to configure Sprint SmartView. That eventually errors out, and only then does the new appointment window open.
Hopefully this doesn't continue.
(EDIT: I should note that my Outlook has acted wonky with opening attachments for a while now. But it's usually just really really slow... So it could be Outlook's fault, and it's just that the latest Windows Install has been Sprint's program.) |
