| Hopefully the high ping problem you guys are having will be like mine. I had a 170-200ms ping and maybe a 400kb connection when I started with Sprint EVDO last spring. Then my pings started getting bad in Nov/Dec 2007, up to 400ms average or more. Then in January something happened and suddenly I have a 1 megabit or better connection and a ~170ms ping. Maybe enough people called and complained... |

I have currently the same crap going on with Verizon. dl I'm all over the place, pings from 90 ms to no answer, upload works fine around 500kbps (through linksys router). All this to started march 1st, exactly when sprint powered up their EVDO on the tower two miles away .... so yeah sprint data card is on the way |

We experienced a problem last year and after we contacted some people pretty high up the food chain at Sprint, they informed me that 50 people already reported the problem - so they do prioritize issues based on the number of people that report a particular problem. |
Michael, will you contact the same people about this issue? Sounds like help is needed. |

Similar problem, different circumstances.
I live outside all broadband service and won't go satellite.
After jumping through innumerable hoops and finally finding a knowledgeable, sympathetic tech at Sprint, I was able to locate the closest Sprint tower to my home. It's 4 miles away. They really don't want to tell you which towers they are on - every cell tower isn't Sprint.
I have the Wilson Yagi antenna on a pole outside, aimed direct LOS to that tower. Running a low-loss LMR cable and quality connectors.
Here's some data as of right now:
Pinging google.com [74.125.47.104] with 32 bytes of data:
Yagi connected:
Reply from 74.125.47.104: bytes=32 time=151ms, 165ms, 138ms, 152ms
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Average = 151ms
Yagi disconnected:
times=182ms, 149ms, 245ms, 320ms TTL=237
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Average = 224ms
This is better than usual ping times observed.
First, I thought that the Yagi might greatly drop the times - was that wrong?
Second, what can I do do drop these down to a lower time?
It is noticeable in most sessions, but online gaming (CoD4) really gets me killed - literally. A 250 ms lag is a quarter second - plenty of time for you to die before you can react. Just an example.

I just checked and Verizons EVDO RevA is about a mile or two away from my house. I also thought that Verizon had an unlimited data plan? Or is that the 5Gb per month crap? Last month I used over 30Gigs on the Sprint unlimited plan. Oh well I guess. I will be calling Sprint again to complain again!! |

Here's mine from Okeechobee, FL. It's 9 AM so the morning rush might be a problem.
Safari is working OK. Just takes a moment or two extra to download the web pages. However I load 15 or so at a time into tabs and the first page usually loads quickly so I can view it while the others load.
Mail is working OK. |

I've been having high pings the last couple days at my office location but fine at home. Was able to confirm that other laptops had high ping times too at work.
When in ##DEBUG, there was high packet error rate. Check if that's an issue (move mouse over Stop button and type ##DEBUG while connected).
I called Sprint and told them about the high packet rate and that EVDO was almost unusable. They fixed it the next day.
They also asked for the PN and RSSI in the ##DEBUG screen.
Send emails to them as well with the PN/RSSI and street address.

I wonder if there are tower upgrades going on for qChat or something? |

Sprint was broken here the last coupble of days. I sent off the contact form and the connection was perfect right away after that, sooner than anyone could even read it. I hope is stays fixed. It's happened a few times in the last year. Usually it gets fixed fairly prompbly. It is nothing like the hell that was wildblue. |

Ping still slow but speeds are up. Other sites give a better upload speed but this download seems typical for today.
I'll take the slow ping if I get the fast downloads. The ping time seems to only affect the start of the web page download and since I use Safari and typically have it set to open 10+ pages at once, only the first is a bit slow while the others open in the background. |

When testing your pings, do it at the command line to google.com or some other site. The latency reported on speedtest sites are usually way off.
Also be sure to check for packet error rate in the ##DEBUG screen and let Sprint know if it's greater than 0. |
