Does anyone know:

- Are existing plans grandfathered in and left alone? (Not throttled/no overage fees).

- Are new lines of service subject to throttling only? Is there an additional overage fee and if so how much?

My rep seems to have not much information on this. Throttling on existing lines and overages of .005 per KB on new lines was their answer.

Thanks1

Excellent blog Alex!

My take on the thing since it depends on who you talk to at Verizon (many different answers) is we'll simply just have to wait until it all plays out over the next 30 something days and see something in writing on their website. With Verizon's tactics with me personally and the general public I would make no bets whatsoever until it all unfolds in black and white irregardless of word of mouth posts or otherwise.

Thanks Alex. I sent a volly against my rep to take to the higher up... see what happens.

I wish Sprint offered a public routable statip IP on their lines of service, would make moving hundreds of lines from Verizon to Sprint much easier!

Existing lines are grandfathered. These are the lines subject to throttling. Lines activated March 2 and after are the ones that will be charged overages. .005 KB is not correct. It is $.49 per MB with the 59.99 plan.

There will be 3 different TOS after March 2. One for people who activated prior to November 1, 2007. One for people who activated between November 1, 2007 - March 1, 2008. One for poeple who activate on or after March 2, 2008.

See, the information changes daily here, like the weather. Like I said everyone should wait until 3G has the full scoop and it's in black and white on Verizon's site.

On edit that doesn't make sense at all. 2 different dates before March 2nd?? Let them try to get me to sign a new TOS beyond what I agreed to when I signed up and see how fast customers bail. I stick to my statement above. You don't sell something to someone then turn around and say hey here's a different agreement. Nope. Wouldn't fly with me anyway. If all is true they are doing Sprint a huge favor lol. Giving them lots of new service.

Nothing is changing... The dates are as they stand. You already signed the TOS when you activated. There are currently 2 TOS depending on when you activated and signed your two year agreement. The change back in November is when they dropped the "Unlimited" word out of the name. Do you remember when that happened?

It used to be Unlimited Data then it changed to BroadbandAccess.

OK got the date thing down now, but why they did this is beyond me unless they felt sorry for Sprint and wanted to hand them accounts hand over fist. I was one. Verizon has become way too restrictive and way too many constraints all they can do is drive folks away unless they are the only carrier in a local.

Look at the differences and tell me..

**Verizon 5 GB cap then charges for overage
**Sprint no cap and no additional charges
**Verizon does not allow routers to be used
**Sprint does and will even sell you one.

There are a few other small items, but it doesn't take a lot of Rocket science to see the differences and savings etc. In my Opinion the move by Verizon did nothing but hurt them.

Can't get Sprint here so I'm stuck with Verizon. Not that I'm complaining since I have been very happy with the service since I started last September.

I'm thinking Verizon better have a good solid way of informing customers as they approach the 5gb limit or they will be asking for more problems.

I would certainly think that Verizon will need to update their usage page more often. 3-4 day old usage information isn't going to cut it anymore....

For what they want to charge for overage a hand needs to come out of the screen and smack us when we are getting close.

Maybe a mouse that shocks you once an hour when you go over 4.5gb. Shocked

They will need a way to lock your account once you hit 5gb and ask your permission to allow usage over 5gb. I had a one way satellite system like that. I think it was 4gb a month and you had a choice that at 4gb it would just lock down or you could choose that anything over 4gb you get charged extra. I choose to have it locked down.

Why would Verizon have to lock your account and get permission to let you keep going? If you go over your voice minutes, they just charge you the overage. I don't see why EVDO data would be any different.

That isn't to say that the prices aren't insane. I've would like to say that I think their overage rates are a huge rip off. Not quite as bad as sprint wanting to charge $.03/kb if you don't have a PAM plan, but not much better.

It honestly wouldn't be all that bad if they just kept a throttle after 5GB. With the throttle you can still surf the web and do e-mail (incredibly important), but it keeps you from 'hogging' it all month.

But the ovarage charges are insane. A song download from iTunes (99 cents) would cost you $5 in bandwidth charges. Doubling your monthly usage from 5GB to 10GB, which logically should cost $80/month * 2, or $160, would cost you $2,530.

I can't imagine who convinced them this was a good idea.
