| Interesting indeed. Sprint just launched evdo here in the San Luis Obispo area so I assume the we were not part of the canceled 08 upgrades in socal. Thankfully. Verizon (the data folks, the local store) kept telling me we'd have evdo here by March 1st and now it's June and who knows then so I had to bail if I wanted broadband. I know many here who are bailing. I think Verizon has lost the market here. I guess the old adage "those who snooze lose" lol? Anyway it all sounds like it will get very interesting before it's over. |

This is true! You have to choose the carrier that best suits your needs as a consumer. I would jump ship as well if I lived in place where the other guy had the product I wanted. I thought we had all of our areas covered with EVDO by now... Guess not.
It takes a long time to deploy EVDO. So I can assure you that if it was just launched, it was in the making for at least a year.
I hope we get EVDO there soon! I can assure you VZW is so on top of this it makes the little peoples lives a living nightmere at times. I have been working more nights than days doing these upgrades.
Just to clairify to my last post. A single EVDO carrier is two T1 lines bonded together. So if you were to do the math, it would equal 1.544MB/sec x2. So it is actually 3.088MB/sec. They just round up to the 3.1 figure. _________________ 595, 595U, 5750 |

Are you using T1 as a way to illustrate the bandwidth of EVDO Rev A? If so, I get it.
However, it should be noted that not all towers with Rev A have two T1 lines providing back haul. Some have 1, some have 2, and some have more or don't use T1 lines at all.

This is terrible news(If True). Does anyone no how long the old TOS will apply to existing customers?
Also, I recently have been throttled between (180-210Kbps), My question is how long does the bandwidth throttling apply?
Thanks |

This is currently available and I would like to think is on the website somewhere. It has been available for over 6 months now.
March 2 is the date you will see all this. They would not post it now because it is NOT the TOS that is in effect today.
I can tell you that I have been extremely busy adding 2nd and 3rd EVDO carriers to a boat load of cell sites here in SoCal.
Just so you all know, a single EVDO carrier is 3.1MB per second of data. So a cell site with 2 or 3 carriers is 6.2 or 9.3MB per second. They are serious about putting Sprint in the toilet. Of course the only problem is that if they cap the customer on the usage, that will be very hard to do.
In VZW's favor, Sprint has announced to the rest of the industry that they have canceled ALL network upgrades for 2008 due to a serious financial situation. So here in SoCal we are aquiring many licenses that Sprint held for new coverage. | Are you sure you are not referring to Wimax? That's the only rollout that Sprint has scaled back. With all due respect, how do they expect to "put Sprint in the toilet" with draconian policies like this? Then again Sprint wouldn't need someone to put them in the toilet. They have almost done that by their own doing. |

I was at the Verizon store today and asked the rep if I could extend my 1-year AirCard contract to 2 years so I could lock in my rates and terms, and he said they are locked in until I cancel. Even though the contract "expires" in 1 year, I don't need to worry about the terms changing unless I am the one who cancels it.
Should I trust that? |

Boy I'm not sure as I was told by Verizon that once a contract expires (after March 1st) and is renewed the new charges will apply. They also told me that if your contact expires and you go on month to month the new charges apply. I don't see how if you have no contract, but then again I suppose if you don't you're at their mercy? I'd ask the folks at 3G Store as soon as they get the entirety of this since they are resellers and should have all the info soon.
As Alex mentioned earlier for new customers they had better hurry and do something before the 1st of March! Man ya have to hate that. Depends on who you talk to at Verizon as to how it works. Too many different answers lol. My suggestion if you don't go through the 3G Store be sure and document the date, time and persons name who you talk to. That saved me and was able to get out of my contract with no ETF's due to being given misinformation. Good luck! |

FYI
Here on East coast, Sprint is havng MAJOR lay-offs and closing a switch and backhauling everything to there NY switch.I hate to see anyone loose there job.
also It does take a very long time to get EVDO up and running in an area..Most of it is due to the facilities ie OC3's back to switches.Which is out of providers hands as to how fast this gets done They are at the mercy of a third party Telco. It might be a wirless network But only from user to cellsite and vise versa..From there it travels back to the switch via fiber, copper or microwave..With that said if any of these leased lines are dirty or improperly configured it will hinder EVDO speeds.. |

In all reality both major carriers seem to be having major problems. I guess the only way to avoid problems or to insure good service is to have an account with both lol! Just use the fail-over feature to bounce back and forth between the two! I hate seeing anyone lose jobs as well. Right now with the economy the way it is it just ads to the strain. Verizon wins one market and Sprint wins another. EVDO is like a box of chocolates, ya never know what you're gonna get. I do think Verizon's current pricing and tactics will drive people to Sprint though. Next Sprint will do something to drive people to Verizon. It's like a ping pong game.Guess we'll see when 3G get all the accurate scoop on things.
In my case as a full-time RV'er cable and DSL are not an option. It boils down to either evdo or satellite. The bad part is the 2 year contracts. Very expensive to switch mid stream with ETF's. Just have to go with what works for you I reckon and at the moment that is Sprint for me. There is no Verizon evdo available in my home area yet and looks months if not longer away. Sprint has no cap on bandwidth and also approves the use of routers. Who knows it may all change tomorrow. Either way I sure hate hearing about anyone losing their jobs. |

I second that one. However, when throttled, is it download that is only affected? If upload is affected as well, what is the speed throttled to on upload? |

I'm not so sure they will throttle any of the new customers under the new pricing plans as they (Verizon) will be paid for excess bandwidth beyond the plan limits. For those grandfathered in and not bound by the new TOS it remains to be seen on the throttling over the 5 Gig I guess. In direct response to your question though I've never in my 5 years with Verizon ever seen anyone throttled back, I'm sure there are some, I just never saw or knew of them.
for me after living with 1xRTT for 5 years their throttle back speeds are still almost twice as fast as their 1xRTT speeds ol. |

very similar here. throttle back speed with the still low latency is much faster then Hughes
So after six years on sat I really enjoy Verizon EVDO.....
...but had for six months Sprint and liked it more traveling in the southwest. As soon as the new Sprint tower close to my house gets the EVDO activated, I will have again both providers |

Yep, had Hughes for 5 years with Verizon 1x as backup. Sprint finally launched evdo here at my home base and I had to go out and buy a helmet, G suit and 3 point racing harness things were so fast lol. Now here I( sit with my Sprint U727 and ordering my new CTR350 next week and a KR1 with a Verizon U720.(Dormant lol). God I miss setting up the sat in the rain and cold. and I thought that was fast! When I went from 1x to evdo I got the worst case of whiplash you could imagine!
My boys want my KR1 and U720 modem so all isn't lost. |

This is correct information. The two year contract is only put in place to ensure the return of subsidized equipment. Once the contract expries, your service continues to be exactly the same as it was when you were under contract. Even if after 2 years you decide you need a new pc card, you can get a new card with a new 2 year agreement on the existing plan that you have always had.
This is also true with voice plans. There is only ONE handset for sale today that will REQUIRE you to move to the new National plans. This would be the LG Voyager. All other handsets for sale today are allowed to keep the grandfathered America's Choice Plans. (or any other grandfathered plan) _________________ 595, 595U, 5750 |

Upload Speed seems to be about the same as Down. |
