|
|
I'm new here, and just diving into the EDVO world, so bear with me if I ask a dumb question. But here's my story.
I work for a large company that is graciously allowing me to start working from home. I live in the sticks and don't have access to cable or DSL. My company's Virtual Office Group recommended going wireless. I'm 3.5 miles from the nearest Sprint tower and appear to get a strong signal. My company provided me with the Sprint service and a EX720 data card. They also bought me a Linksys WRT54G3G-ST router. Problem is, I can't get it to work. After several mind numbing conversations with Linksys Support, I finally got to a tier 2 support guy that actually spoke understandable english. He's telling me the EX720 is not compatible with this router. Is this true?
The box the router came in says it is configured for Sprint Mobile Broadband Service.
Since I'm unable to get any help from Sprint, Linksys, or the Virtual Office Group, any help or suggestions you can supply would be gratly appriciated. Thanks _________________ John

Its true. Sprint only supports Sprint PCMCIA EVDO cards in that router. Stupid. yeah, we know.
There are other routers that will work with EX720. Check out this chart:
3G Router Compatibility Chart
my choice would be the most excellent CradlePoint CTR350, using usb adapter.
(pic below shows CTR350 with usb adapter, and similar V740 expresscard):

Alex did Sprint just bail on the Expresscard -> PC Card adapter for use in the WRT54G3G-ST (much like they did on the whole upload issue)? _________________ --Larry |

we've sold hundreds of the CDT350 in a very short period of time.
i am sure that one of those customers has used nortel VPN with it,
and i've not heard of any report that it doesn't work.
of course, we offer a 14 day return policy and expert tech support
(fyi, i'm not good enough to be 3gstore tech staff. our guys are great!) |

i've never seen anything from sprint that said support was going to happen,
so its more as if they just never planned for it.
like i said -- its just stupid. |

I just purchased this router as I have the same situation. So, since the firmware is over 1 year old, and this card has been around a while, I thought I'd check with Linksys to see what they said about this. This was her reply. Based on this, it seems like the only option is to have it be open sourced. I am not a C++ guy, so I'm hoping that OpenWrt or someone else can get this to work as it sounds like Sprint is dropping the ball.
Linksys: we do not have any information yet when will be the firmware available or when will it be available.
But you can check out the Linksys website for further update. But I cannot assure if there will be an upcoming firmware upgrade that will work with this card.
Me: that doesn't seem to make sense that there would not be firmware available...ever
Linksys: I apologize but we do not have any information if there will be a release for anew firmware that will support this card.
Me: is Linksys or Sprint responsible for making the firmware available for this card?
Linksys: Both companies will be responsible for it. We provide the hardware and they will be the one to provide the firmware. |

kevin, you would be much better off with a cradlepoint router using the usb-to-expresscard adapter.
this picture shows a verizon v740 setup with adapter and ctr350,
but the EX720 works as well, and with either CTR350 or PHS300:

I realize I can use a different router. However, what I like about this one is the fact I can use it with a regular connection as well, meaning I can link it to other routers or use it at home with my DSL connection--if I need to. Additionally, being a (Cisco) router with multiple ethernet ports, it has a lot more flexibility.
What it sounds like I'll have to do is contact Sprint and get the S720, which I really don't want to do as I like the express size--and I already have the PCMCIA adapter. |

I downloaded Openwrt and followed the instructions posted here. I did have to manually set it for Sprint as a dialup modem but it works great. 1.5 - 2meg dowload speeds. I took me an hour.
I did make one mistake I forgot my password to login as admin. If I press the hardward reset button on my router what will happen? What is the default login?
Appreceiate any help on this issue. |

So are you saying you got it to work with the Sprint ExpressCard? If so, great, I'll give it a try. What firmware rev do you have on your card? 145?
Thanks. |

That's great news Tech1. Any chance you can give detailed instructions to what you did exactly to make it work? Not only am I a newbie to all this, but I'm also somewhat software technically challenged when it come to this stuff. Thanks. _________________ John |
