I decided to look seriously into replacing cable internet with Sprint mobile broadband - mainly because of mobility. (I realize I won't get the speed with SMB, it's the mobility for about the same price that I'm looking at.)

So, I purchased the TopGlobal MB6800 for in-home, and the CradlePoint CTR350 for travel, both from 3GStore.

After about a weeks worth of use, I started getting the feeling that the MB6800 was letting me down in terms of throughput, compared to the CradlePoint. It was just a feeling though, so I decided to runs some tests.

I have an EX720 express card which I've connected to both routers with an SIIG expresscard to usb adapter, also purchased from 3GStore.

For about an hour I've been leaving the card in exactly the same spot, but connecting it back and forth between the two routers and running speed tests. The CradlePoint is definitely blowing the TopGlobal away.

I decided I'd share my results, so just before posting I connected the TopGlobal and ran three speed tests at speedtest.net, and then ran three with the CradlePoint. All tests were done through the same destination server (Lexington, KY, closest in proximity to me.)

Here are the results:

TopGlobal MB6800

Ping/Down/Up
247 793 264
242 884 295
258 743 279

CradlePoint CTR350

Ping/Down/Up
207 947 358
273 1142 378
245 1285 391

There is quite a significant difference between the two routers. I don't really understand why the router would play such a big factor in throughput.

The only thing I've changed in either router is the security, everything else is defaulted. My system is the only one connected, so there is no other traffic the router is dealing with during my tests.

Does anyone have any idea if the TopGlobal can be tuned to match the CradlePoint? If not, it's going back to 3GStore and I'll replace it with another CradlePoint.

I'm curious, how are you making your measurements, speedtest.net?

I have a TopGlobal 6800 that I am using in lieu of cable internet and have max downloads of around 1400.
