You need to get power to the router and EVDO card, that requires a run of wire. I would run cat 5e cable to the computer. You say it is only a 200 foot run, much less then the 328 ft limit. Even if you want to use the wireless method, I would mount the router and EVDO card near ground level in a waterproof enclosure that would provide easy access. Using low loss LMR600 or LMR400 cable from the antenna down to the enclosure. I would not like to climb the tower every time I needed to service the electronics.[/quote]
Thanks for the advice on the limit length on the cat 5 cable. I agree that climbing the tower is bad but I failed to include that I modified the tower, a Rohn HDBX48 that pivots at the 16 foot point. about 30 years ago so it would swap ends in a very short time and the top becomes the bottom,
I need wireless anyway as one computer is 300 feet away and running the cat 5 underground with heavy traffic over it scares me. <G>

Sounds like an interesting project. When you get the system all put together report back here and post photos. |

just wanted to throw a note out there to everyone planning on using the hyperlink grids.
They do work well, but the metal reflector at the end of the collector tends to come off in high wind (we use these at the wisp i work for) so i recommend some sort of adhesive to hold them on because with the reflector off you do tend to loose 2-3dB of signal.
And as for burying cat5e, don't be worried about it, just use good quality underground shielded cable like belden 7921a . you just might need heavy duty crimpers for that stuff. But all in all we've been burying it for quite some time now and haven't had a lick of problems.

Regarding these antenna's and weather..
I just put up one out at that co-workers site that I've been working on.
So far the biggest effector of the signal has been fog.
We've had a few days of snow out here (western Ohio), and that's not seemed to do anything negative, but after the snow, we had a few "warmer" days, and the fog got pretty thick. The heavy fog pretty much trashed the signal, but the snow on the antenna didn't seem to do much.
And from reading this thread, I appear to have the antenna polarized wrong.. <oops>

Another thing to add, if you're having a problem with ice & snow buildup, just use some pam.
spray it down before winter. and it works wonders.
Also no garlic flavored pam won't keep the vampires from bleeding off your signal.

This may be an insignificant point but it's almost certainly not the fog, per se, but rather water(rather than ice) in/on foliage between you and the cell site.
WRT polarization error- this is really good news for you because if you have it cross-polarized, once you fix it you are going to see a BIG difference.

I figured it was the water, not the fog per-se.... water & foliage does seem to be the killer.
It'll probably get bad this spring, as well when it starts raining so much between March and May....
Good to know on the polarization, we thought the dish itself was an improvement over the yagi, good to know it should even be better. (No, I've not shimmied up the tower again to take it down and adjust it.)
Thanks for all of the input....

thebordello, sounds like your location and situation might be similar to mine.
I also have a grid antenna but because of fowl weather I havent been able to spend much time adjusting it.
My question is, are you aiming it right at a tower? Reading your post it seems like maybe you found a unique direction thats working for you. Also did you end up tilting it or keeping it level?
Sorry about being so inquisitive but I would really like to solve my particular signal issue and I'm inspired to here about people getting things worked out.
Any ideas appreciated also. |

| Question from a new EVDO user, please . . I have the UM 150 UTStarcom modem with Alltel service. Would one of these panel antennas help my signal? If not, what kind, since the Yagi doesn't seem to help some folks. I am less than 2.3 miles from tower, but fluctuate between EVDO and 1x. What type amplifier, router, etc. would I need? Remember, I've spent too much of hubby's money already, so I need to be cheap! Thanks for any and all help. |
