There are some rumors floating around that the Mogul, PPC-6800 will get a new firmware upgrade later THIS month, the upgrade to include:

- Rev A (currently firmware supports Rev 0)
- bluetooth fixes
- keyboard issues resolved

We will have to wait and see.

Excellent.

Is the internal GPS enabling still a part of the update package?

There have been a lot of complaints about bluetooth performance, so I'll be watching this carefully. Bluetooth needs to work right if we're going to use it to tether at high speeds for starters.

October 25, 2007 - Mogul by HTC Software Update

A maintenance release for the Mogul (PPC 6800) is now available which provides several key updates:

* Improves Bluetooth compatibility and performance
* Corrects keypad function when using On Demand
* Corrects Alarm so it will ring when device is charging
* Corrects several Sprint Music performance issues like fast-forwarding
* Enables Sprint Music store to function on early production devices
* Adds new Sprint start-up and sign-off screens

All users should update their ROM even if they do not experience any of these issues currently. Users must back-up any data added to their device before updating the software. Instructions and the software download are posted at http://www.america.htc.com/support/mogul/default.html

This update does not include EV-DO Rev. A or GPS functionality. Another software update to enable these services is targeted for release in Jan 2008.

Leaving out the promised A rev upgrade is just too many kinds of lame. How many have bought this item because of the promised upgrade?

I think now the pearl is going to be the first rev A phone. The HTC touch isn't likely to have Rev A either. Its plain that they consider that functionality a low priority. Disappointing.

Your statement seems far fetched as no reputable source that has reported on the CDMA Pearl has even remotely hinted at that. Did you get this from a source or just a wild assumption?

It may well be far fetched. When the CDMA Pearl was announced it said it would support high speed EVDO. After reviewing a number of different CDMA phones, they all claim to be high Speed EVDO without supporting Rev A.

I take some comfort that professional writers reviewing these phones don't seem to be any more savvy than I am with regard to clarifying what the phone can actually do.

Going forward I'm going to assume phones do NOT support Rev A unless the specs specifically say so. On a side note, I wonder what is so difficult about Rev A that Sprint can roll it out to more than 90 per cent of its customers without being able to field a phone capable of using it?

I'm sure others will agree that this little "fix" is hardly worthy. To me, there are only 3 things in the update: bluetooth, keypad, and alarm. I almost laughed and cried at the same time when HTC is touting this new feature of the update:
*Adds new Sprint start up and sign off screens

Wow, thanks I've been waiting for that!!! ;P

I can't imagine that they've only been working on Rev A and GPS since the release, they must have started a good time before the June 2007 launch. So it's incredibly disheartening to see this as what they've come out with.

I've installed the Live! mapping software which is great, but would be even better if it tracked me via even aGPS.

This "update" makes me wish I would have waited for something better or gotten a blackberry instead.

I'm beginning to suspect that the Rev A upgrade has more to do with marketing and less to do with engineering.

As soon as one rev A phone comes out, the rest of the phones are obsolete with respect to networking. They (Sprint) could easily be holding off release of a Rev A phone until they have more manufacturers releasing Rev A competitors in the same time frame.

I already beat them to the punch with my own custom start-up screens... -__-

I see that MobiTV has added the PPC 6800 to their supported units. This is good news if you were holding off for the missing multimedia piece of the puzzle.

I am curious to know if you can access MobiTV and get Sprint's phone as modem service at the same time. that is something you can't do with Sprint, its either one or the other.

We were promised some bluetooth transfer figures, but never got them. I assume that is for the very good reason that rev A is delayed, although it would be telling if the rev 0 figures over bluetooth were good.

I had a niggling problem with the unit for the brief time I had it, and maybe someone can advise. I got low memory warmings very easily, and there didn't seem to be an intuitive way to shut programs down once they started running. Very odd, but I'm a noob to the smart phone world.

EVDO and REV A operate on two separate bandwidths, EVDO came first so to have a high speed evdo phone is a correct statement. And you need to remember Sprint does not make phones, they currently "field" several Rev A compatible phones, they just need the vendor to release the PRL and Radio upgrades. the 6800, Touch and a few others in production utilize the Qualcom 6800 chipset "Rev A"

You're referring to EVDO and REV A as two different things, when my understanding is that REV A is also EVDO, but simply a faster implementation of it. If your explanation is correct, it only underscores the confusion that a nexus of poor marketing and dillatory engineering has introduced.

I guess I missed the campaign of adds claiming they were the same technology, why trash talk an advancement, embrace it, and I think you mean “dilatory” and if so I would like to know how you came to that conclusion, what experience do you have engineering new technologies?
