If you look at the specs for the 680 card and the 5750 card you won't find any dominate reason to buy the 680 and have to go through all the hastle of sleds and routers.
I bought the PC 5750 Rev a card, plugged it into an old KR1 updated to 1010 and added an external antenna due to my fringe area position. I get EVDO with dl speeds from 500-1000 and ul speeds of 30-65. I'm pleased as punch.
This system was purchased the 1st of Sept and has delighted me ever since. Perhaps I have simple tastes but I build and maintain several web sites and FTP large audio and some video file for my editing business.
I had asked a tech at Kyocera if the 5750 card would work tho not listed as compatable with the KR1 yet and he assured me that it does work. I took the chance and it sure does work.
I like everything about this system, even Alltel.

From the very first, i have never put in a password, phone number or any information to get the card connected. Just hit connect when the control panel pops up.
As far as the KR1 - 5750 card goes, I forgot to mention that I had to do some body work above the PCMCIA slot in the KR1. I took the router apart and cut off the top of the slot in the back panel so the card would slide in futhur. I then had to cut out the side of that slot to allow for the side connected external antenna plug.

As I had stated, I do have a KPC650 en route....but the 680 is capable of Rev. A which the 650 and 5750 are not.....

As I stated before there is little difference between the 680 and the 5750 cards except the Express/PCMCIA connection. The 5750 card is ABSOLUTLY a Rev. A card.

| The 5750 is Rev A. It's the 5740 that's Rev 0 only. I think you have to have the latest firmware from Alltel in there for it to show that it's Rev A capable in the help screen. I can't remember for sure, though. |

Yep....you folks are correct. I am picking up a 5750 tonight.....
I know it probably will not work in the KR1, and thats OK. I would gladly get a Linksys router and get away from Kyocera completely.....

It should work with the latest firmware for the KR1, actually. |

Well.....the 5750 sort of works for me.
The reception is much worse than the 680. I am getting EVDO once in a while, but mostly 1X each time I connect.
It would not stay connected until I disabled the wireless portion of the KR1, which i think we knew would happen.
The saving grace MAY me the fact that I can buy an external antenna for the 5750 and that may be what I need to do.
UPDATE from Kyocera: I did send them a nasty-gram about how pitiful it is that their 680 will now work with the KR1 properly. The response was foolish. They stated that the 680 is completely compatible with the KR1, using THEIR USB adapter. They went on to say that the adapter is not availbable and I would have to wait to make them work together.
Dear Kyocera: My 680 was returned today....and the KR1 is headed back next week in favor of a LinkSys.......go pound!

Sorry I wasn't able to reply earlier -- had an appointment I had to goto. Not putting a username and password in does allow me to get on the network, but I put it in there just in case.
Let us know how the new Linksys unit works. I've always liked Linksys hardware -- may be interested in switching. Even though the KR1 and KPC680 work great for me, I do still experience disconnects every so often. I believe it's because I'm right on the fringe (probably about 6-7 miles away from the closest tower and I'm surrounded by pines). Amazed I can get a signal at all. |

Make sure you have the update for the 5750 on the alltel site (under the customer service link - May 2007 update) for the firmware, and then have support push the latest prl to you (40020). If you want to manually install the prl, send me your email address via pm and I'll send it to you - or you can go to the corolada prl page (http://corolada.com/prl/) for it. These two things will fix the dropping to 1x problem, but you still may need an external (I do, and I'm only 2 miles from the tower - but I have a brick house). |

jfarris,
I have a few dumb questions:
1. How do I find out which PRL I have? I assume I need the card in my laptop, not the router?
2. How do I get the latest PRL INTO the card?
3. I see that there is a 40023 now, would be just as good?

I found that I am at PRL40020 which is good, and the software update from Alltel had already been applied. I still get 1x mainly, and an occasional EVDO. BUT....I have never been disconnected at all.
It may be worth buying the LinkSys router and a booster antenna for the 5750....

OK, I have the external antenna, the 5750, and the linksys router. They all went together very easily last night and the connection appears to be strong. I get about 500 down, and 120 up but I do not have Rev A in my area, so I think those numbers are pretty normal.
So far, I am happy to be rid of the Kyocera junk and on to better and more stable performance with the 5750/Linksys combo!

New to all this so looking for advice. From reading this forum it seems that there are two possible combinations for Alltel:
KR1 and KPC680 and
Linksys WRT54G3G-0ST and 5750
Also seems there is trouble with the KR1 and KPC 680 card.
My questions are:
Which is the best combination?
Can I buy the card from other then Alltel? If so, how do I activate the account?
Right now I have the CDU-550 on the 14 day trial but going to return it since it seems no routers support it.
Thanks and please forgive these questions from a newbie to this!
