Indio,
A good idea. Unforuntately Im too busy for the next couple of weeks to try driving it around, though I could at least take it on some errands. Problem is that the disconnects arent fast and furious, so if it works during a couple hours of errands, it doesnt necessarily prove anything either way.
Im in Bozeman MT. EvDO actually hasnt been announced here yet, but its been live for a couple weeks. I doubt that my pre-announcement use is the problem though... my card works perfectly in my laptop USB. Its just the KR1 where it drops every couple hours. Im now on 48 hours straight in the laptop, no issues, blazing speed.
Thanks. |

Units returned to Kyocera as defective are not resold ever, even if they are later proven to be working units. Though I have seen places like Fry's do that a lot. |
Thanks for that info mackieman. Good to know. |

| I have this same issue. I have a USB 720+KR1w/latest firmware and even though the disconnects are much, much less frequent(used to be every few mins), it is still an issue. Being a mild gamer also, I have noticed that the disconnects tend to happen when you are putting a heavy load on the router and modem. Now obviously the KR1 is the item that is disconnecting, as I have tested and found that when the modem is plugged straight in these issues do not arise. Instead of disconnects I tend to get an occasional connection problem but it wont disconnect, could this be what trips the router? What I wonder is could it be the routers' lack of the use of the VZW Connection Manager Software type Application. Now, I have no understanding of this stuff, I'm just asking a blank question. I know you can use it in NDIS(VZW Connection Software) mode but technically isnt the software still running to an extent. Or the fact it was used to connect to the network have any bearing on this? |

| Interesting. I should have mentioned earlier that while my disconnects seem to happen at any time, they seem more likely to occur during peak times of the day and/or when I am using a lot of bandwidth. If I use BitTorrent, I almost certainly see a disconnect within 30 minutes (while using the KR1 with the USB720). |

I routinely every few days upload or download a 250 Meg file using my MacBook Pro, Windows XP under Boot Camp and a U720 on Sprint using LogMeIn to connect to a remote PC.
So far after a dozen such events I have never had a disconnect or interrupt although Windows XP has gone to sleep on me and I have had to log back in. When I do, the download is still working.
When I tested connecting to a Belkin powered USB hub, I had various problems never experienced before then as I described elsewhere. That made me wonder but not have the expertise to know whether the cards work better with a direct connection to the computer without some other chips and drivers in between the card and computer.
The Belkin usb hub works fine with my Canon printer and syncs my Treo 700P without problem and works with my Seagate portable drive.
The only problem is with the hub which had port problems and Apple's WWAN decided incorrectly that I am using Verizon. Sounds a little like all those posts saying, "Works OK in my computer but not in the router." |

After reading some of these posts, I got to thinking about some things and wanted to add them (maybe it will help narrow down the problem).
I also have a motorhome and have used this setup on some long trips while in there. I had the exact same problems as I do at home. Constant freezing no matter where I was - but still periods of short steady use in between. Powering down the router almost always solves the problem temporarily.
One unique situation I have at home - which I've brought up to Kyocera and DLink - is that I live in an area right between broadband and national access. I've wondered if the swtiching between services could be locking up the router. Using the modem alone there is no connection problem when this switch occurs - the speed is just reduced. The reason I didn't think this was a huge issue is that I've had the same problem in the motorhome in just about every situation you could think of (strong signals, weak signals, broadband, national access, etc).
The only thing I know is that the modem works fine without the router, and I'm on my 3rd router with the same problems. I have to get another router and am thinking about trying another modem as well. The USB720 doesn't work for me in my laptop well because it sticks out so far from the computer, and I have 2 young kids. It's just a matter of time before it accidentally gets bent or broken off.
Since I am not an expert with these connections, I was hoping someone could recommend an alternative option that has worked well for them - especially Verizon users. I want to go back to a PCMA type card (so it doesn't stick out so far) and that works well with a router. Any router is fine. I just need everything to be compatible with Verizon and my Dell Insprion computer.
Thanks for any help or recommendations. Hopefully this KR1 USB720 issue gets resolved. But, my wife is taking online classes and we need a combo that works for us. |

Good insight, thanks... I can relate to the situation with the wife.
I suspected it might be the EvDO/1X hopping too, so I went into the advanced config (the hack is posted here somewhere... use ctrl+D and diagvzw as the password, i believe..) and set it to HDR only. Didnt help, didnt hurt... so I dont suspect that is the issue.
I still need to try using the Y cable to see if that helps with potential antenna interference, but I dont suspect it will. |

I had previously done this (forgot to mention it though). Whether it helps or hurts I don't know but I figured its one less thing to "trip" the system if you know what I mean. Being that I am on the fringe mine does tend to hop anyway as I had noticed doing random speed tests. After locking problem solved. |

Run modem from your comp for this-
Open Vzw manager(make sure you are NOT connected). Type Ctrl-d, brings up a pw box password is-diagvzw. Select settings, then select HDR only(You'll see it reprog the modem). To go back just follow same steps just when in settings screen choose automatic.
One thing to remember is it kills the signal strength meter on the vzw manager. But once reprogrammed take it and plug it back into the KR-1. I think it helped me when I did it, I always keep it locked. |

Thanks for the instructions. Unfortunately, it didn't help. Still freezing up as before. In fact, it feels like it's a little slower than before when it is working, but I don't know if that's my imagination. My wife mentioned it also (before I had said anything) though.
However, I just got told by a rep at Novatel that "NexAira Inc" is coming out with a router compatible with the U720. Once I confirm this from both sides, I plan to buy it. I'll post here when I confirm. |

Just updating on my trials...
Y-cable: no effect
HDR Only: no effect
Moving location & towers: no effect (signal strength is good anyway)
However, still works perfectly when plugged directly into my USB. No doubt this is an issue with the KR1. Any hope of a firmware fix? Im pretty close to returning the KR1 now. |

I contacted DLink to ask if they had any other routers that were compatible with the U720. One guy told me the DIR-450 was compatible, but another one told me only with Sprint and that they hadn't tested Verizon. I'm wondering if they did test it and just found problems with Verizon.
In any case, it appears that this problem is between the KR1 and Verizon users of the U720. I am returning my KR1 and may try the Nexaira. I was also given an opportunity to return my U720 and may take it. I just want a combo that works. Any Verizon users have a router and modem combo that for sure works? I was told the Kyocera KPC650 card works with the KR1, but sadly the KPC650 is not compatible with my Dell Inspiron laptop!
Thanks,
Dave |

Ever since I made the "HDR only" setting on my router, I have had only 100% national access. I used to get about 60-70% broadband at home. Now, it's 0% of the time. I checked the router settings and it appears back to default. Coincidence or is there something I need to do?
Thanks,
Dave |
