I happily report that I'm posting this reply via my WRT54G3G-ST, running OpenWRT r82. Thanks EVDOwizard, Rangerw, daverup and everyone else who helped. It's very nice to access to *all* the settings/confg via the GUI and command line (I feel right at home).
I flashed r75, then r82.
Fixed the GUI per Alphastar and the Sprint connection per GaryQui.
Fumbled for a while until I figured out the difference between Save Changes and Apply Changes .
Then got errors on the Status | Mobile Network page. Luckily, I had read the entire thread before I started and remembered reading MattyCiii's fix for that. A quick search later, and I was online. Schweet.
I've VPN'd into my office successfully. Now it's time to lock down the wifi and firewall, and start poking around to see what else I can make this thing do. |

I had this device briefly, long enough to learn to hate it.
If for some reason you absolutely have to use Linksys and can't get yourself a nice Cradlepoint.... here's a quick dump of Kamikaze 7.09 with x-wrt.
This should work for any EVDO provider, I've personally only tested it with Verizon and a PC5750 card, YMMV.
Ths is with the Broadcom 2.4 kernel build so you will still have WiFi.
You will need to go into failsafe mode and reset the root password, because i can't remember what I had set it to. You might try 'password' but no guarantees.

I'm just wondering whehter anyone has tried the Kamikaze 7.09 with x-wrt that khelben posted above. Is it easy to flash on WRT54G3G running openwrt whiterussian r82? and is it possible to go back from Kamikaze 7.09 with x-wrt to Openwrt whiterussian r82 in case of any problem?
Many thanks. |

I tried it but had no luck setting the thing up. It's geared for European users it seems.
Password is not 'password' I had to telnet in at failsafe and change it, never could hack around and hit the one he forgot.
I'll be messing around with the Kamakazi version soon as work gives me a breather. _________________ A simple man. |

| I was having fits with my alltel card, and tech support requested I put in the line "at+cta=0" to keep it from going dormant. I'm looking to find out where I could put this in my linksys router with open-wrt. Does anyone familiar with the scripting know where I should add this command. In windows, they wanted me to put in under Extra Initialization Strings. |

| I may have figured this out, but I need confirmation from someone more familiar than me. I put the command in the chatscripts file, just before the rem'd out OK $APN. It seems to start up ok, but I haven't seen a lot of difference. Could anyone familiar with programming this confirm if that is the proper place to enter the command? |

Good evening all. I am having some difficulties in getting my 3G3-ST router to play nicely with my 597E air card from sprint. Sprint Tech Supt. wasn't even aware that sprint was selling these routers; therefore, was of little assistance. Kudos to the tech though because he did give it his all. I can http into the router just fine, but I can not get online. I have confirmed that the 597E card works fine (I'm using it in my laptop at this very moment to post this plea for help.) I'v got the router connected to the desktop via the supplied cat5 cable. I'm running windows xp - sp2. The status tab of the router shows that it can not see the card. I'm guessing that there is something oin the configs that I'm missing, but after struggling with it all evening, I'm asking for help. If anyone can help me, I'd be eternally greatful...so would my other 2 room mates.
Thanks,

There's a known issue with the latest Sprint firmware for that card. I don't have one, but apparently the previous firmware was fine. Do a Google search and you may find more details. |

Using the webif interface, I find that I can login as root or as admin. The color scheme is better (more easily readable) for admin, but is there any other real difference?
EDIT: Actually, I can even log in with no username at all, and webif still works fine but shows username as "not logged in". |

I apologize in advance for making several posts in a row, but it's proving hard to say enough without triggering the anti-spam filters.
Many thanks to EVDO-wizard, Rangerw and everyone else who's contributed. I loaded the r82, or whatever the link in the original post now points to (how can I confirm?), fixed the permissions using Putty, and am up and running at 1.2M down and 250K up. |

I am very pleased to find that failover from WWAN to WAN now works when you disable the card using the button. Good job! When both are on, it always uses WWAN. An option to choose WAN as primary and failover to WWAN would be nice, or even some sort of load-balancing would be superb, but I'm not greedy I'm simply elated to find that I can just hit the button, pop out my card (such as to take it on a trip), and have the WAN kick in. |

Minor issues that I've found so far are that client and client-routed modes don't seem to work (only tried with WPA encryption, though), but AP mode does work using the same encryption.
Also, can anyone suggest a good SIP and/or VoIP filter to use for QoS?
Thanks again to all |

For reference, my configuration is WRT54G3G-ST with OpenWrt White Russian 0.9 (I think it's the r82, trx file downloaded last night from link in first post was titled "OpenWrt-3G Latest Beta") with Verizon AC595 (Rev A firmware update).

Thanks itb44. I took my router back to the Sprint store & their tech guy played around with it & got on the horn to Linksys where we were told that my firmware (2.0.9) was incompatible with the 597E air card. We upgraded to 2.1.12 & that had no effect at all. Linksys support said the router is bad, so I'm waiting on a new one. Once I get the new one, I'm hoping that it's a plug & play as advertised. |

Good luck with that, but I suspect that if you have the newer Sprint firmware on the 597e card (and I don't know how to tell), then it's simply not going to work with even the latest release 2.1.12 Sprint/Linksys firmware on the router (unless they send you a souped-up beta release of the router firmware, or swap your latest 597e for one with the older firmware). The only stock combination reported to work is the new stock router firmware with the old card firmware.
It doesn't sound like you tried the OpenWRT firmware, which might have actually worked even with the new card firmware. I would have been curious to know either way. |
