Some of you may already have noticed this but....

Here's the difference between the .bin and .trx files.

.bin file has extra characters before the letters HDR0

Something like this
Code:
W3GS^@^@^@^@^G ^K^B^AU2ND  <and so on> HDR0

Everything from the beginning of the file till the letters HDR0
is extra in a bin file and they are always the same.
My guess is that HDR0 stands for HEADER0

In a .trx file all these extra characters are missing and the first
characters are HDR0
Sooooooooooo

Just use an editor that displays and edits binary like GVIM
and cut, paste to make your own .bin or .trx files.
I've done this with no problems.

No more searching for the correct format.

2 weeks ago I bought the wrt54g3g router. I could not get upload speeds over 300kbps. And auto reconnect did not always work. I went with this home brewed version and got an increase to about 400kbps (300 to 400 depending on if the Gods were smiling on me that day.).

Now the cool part....

Linksys just released their latest firmware. Now I get 700+kbps uploads all the time. And the auto reconnecte works 100%, and no more disconnects.

If you are looking for the white russian firmware to give you increased uploads, you might want to go back to the Linksys firmware. Plus it now supports additional aircards.

I know you guys have been working very hard to make this router perform better, and I have to give you a big hand for your pioneering efforts. But for the non-tech user like me, it is a no-brainer to go back to OEM firmware because I just don't know how long you will support what you created, and Linksys is not going to take any issues I have seriously knowing I don't have the OEM firmware. So it is really hard to justify running aftemarket firmware on my router when the OEM firmware outperforms it.

Plus the new firmware gives additional security, more data on the screens, and a host of other upgrades. You should take the time to read about it.

Again, I want to congratulate you all on your hard work and thanks for the improvement I enjoyed for the last week.

Just thought I should share for the benefit of all on EDVO fourms.

Da Chef

I wouldn't try this on a different router.

Flashed properly, the firmware is compatible with all Linksys WRT54G3G-XX routers. I have been running R75 on my -AU router for ages.

After much thought on this openwrt firmware update on my WRT54G3G-AU I decided to go ahead and try it as "No try no outcome!". I followed the instructions posted by daverup except that I chose 8_openwrt-3g-r75-wrt54g3g-squashfs.bin as mine is not ST version. I updated to r82 with the permission fix as Rangerw described. All went well. I couldn't make it work initially as My mobile broadband provider was not listed in the provider selection. Instead I had to use Manual/Custom setup and typed a correct dialup Number and APN after checking this with my provider (Three in Australia). After that it started working ,and staying alive and now connected for 3 days in a row. What a different world! It's the first time to stay more than a day without rebooting. I'm still keeping an eye on this and feel that the disconnection issue has gone away. Thanks monakh, daverup, Rangerw and especially evdo-wizard and Openwrt development team who made this firmware available.

I've been out of pocket for a few weeks due to health (stress) reasons but I'll be checking in more often and trying to add some content to the site soon.

I bought a second WRT54G3G-ST from 3G-Store but I get can't find ppp0 when trying to get my V740 to connect with the opemwrt firms. Haven't done any trouble shooting yet on it but strange the card works fine on my original WRT54G3G-ST with openwrt firms. I'm just using the stock linksys firm on it right now.

Welcome back!
Is that second router running the 2.01.12 firmware? I read someone else had recently gotten one from the 3G-store with that version installed.
I think they definitely broke some cards with that version.
Hope your heath continues to improve, and thanks again for r82.

It came with the first linksys firm the 2.00.9. After upgrading to the OpenWRT r75 then the r82 trx I keep getting ppp0 not found so flashed back to the linksys 2.00.9 then upgraded to the 2.01.12.

It works with the 2.01.12vexcept the card has to be removed to access the GUI with is infuriating but I'll sort it out when I can find the time Sad

For clarification, I'm using a VZW V740 express card with the XCA-3 Novatel adapter.

One other thought on the 2nd router. Is it possible the card is binding in the slot and not making full contact on every attempt.
I read about someone else having that problem on one of these routers somewhere. I think in that case they took the covers off and it connected to the card every time.
You've probably already checked this, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Thikn VZW must have slipped in a firmware update on the V740 or something I didn't catch.

I got around to un-bricking my first router and it now shows the same ppp0 error as the new router. Cue the dramatic music, the plot thickens.

Think the Linksys firms must have left some junk laying around.

Flashed my original router to the stock 2.00.9 and did a reset to factory stats then upgraded to r75 and did a hardcore NVRAM erase (mtd -r erase nvram) (not for the faint of heart, can permently brick you) and then rebooted the router, set the network settings, unplugged the router, inserted the card and adapter and pluged the power in and it's back like old times.

I haven't up'ed to r82 yet but I'd bet the farm it will be ok with no ppp0 errors now that the NVRAM is clean.

Same procedure fixed the new WRT54G3G-ST also.

Both routers running r82 and no ppp0 errors with the VZW V740 Express card w/Novatel XCA-3 adapter.

Always happy to see a success story. Smile

Linksys released 2.10.17 for Vodafone -AU routers in the ANZ region. I decided to test it and I must say it's a HUGE improvement over the original release. My VoIP calls sound better all of a sudden. Looks like the upload speeds have been fixed as reported by Chef above.

I hope you feel better, Rangerw.

Hi there,
I am working on something similar to evdo-wizards' work:
adding support for and USB EGDE/GPRS modem type ED77 (boudle of Nokia 12i module and FTDI USB->RS232 converter).

1). I am looking for contact with evdo-wizard, but rules of this forum don't permit it (I have not enough posts). My contact is laurentp@wp.pl

My "starting point" is X-Wrt White Russian.

2). I would like to know modem "responses" to ATI command for different modems (PCCARD and USB) - could you provide me this info? (model/make (etc) / ATI response)

For the moment i can successfully configure connection and connect every time. What is missing is (already done by evdowizard): connect permanent/on demand, add options to network-wan-lan.sh page.
