I am still using a USB 2.0 Ricochet Wireless Modem for my desktop at home but I want to use my Keocera 650 in a PC Bus Adapter. At least till I can get one of those slick routers.
Is there any particular PCI Bus adapter to get or which one works? I see Elan makes an adapter for EDVO (http://www.elandigitalsystems.com/support/pfaq/cardbus.php) for $75.
Anyone able to point to a cheap, working solution. Ideally would just fire up a windoZe XP Pro Pentium II box running ICS as a Internet server. I do that now with Ricochet's USB but I have a need for speed and will then kill off the $30 a month Ricochet. |

| USB should be the preferred device, not PCMCIA. |

USB should be the preferred device?
Considering that the primary target for these devices is mobile use in some form (if you want to debate this one, look at the Verizon TOS), I think that PCMCIA/CardBus is definitely the "preferred" device.
As these service's use expands beyond its initial market, it's very apparent that a USB device is warranted (I wouldn't want one necessarily, but think that it's obviously a great idea for numerous uses / reasons). Even so, I can't see a carrier like Verizon being very gung-ho for such a device since it lends itself so well to wired internet replacement - and vis a vis - shared connectivity.
Trust me, I don't think Verizon is right in limiting the use of which that I feel that I have purchased, much less their completely immoral (if not illegal) misrepresentation of their service as "unlimited". BUT.... until they change their stance (either willingly or unwillingly), I can't comprehend Verizon selling a USB based EVDO device OR any sort of EVDO router (using a card or internally). |

Times are a changing...
I was at a Verizon Meeting last month and VERIZON was showing pictures of differnet 3rd party Routers that they were going to support. My mouth dropped open. HOWEVER, it was going to be for business to use along with a EVDO connection as an emergency backup to their existing wired connection. So, this really doesn't change the TOS, BUT they are moving in new directions. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

I think this gets to the root of the problem. Wireless operators still see themselves primarily in terms of voice, with data as a supplement. With 3G, data should be a core business itself, just like voice. |

I use this one from Newegg:

I think I paid $25 for it but looks like it's $28 now.

I know of at least one major EVDO Manufacturer who is working very hard at getting one out the door AND available in the US for purchase and use.
Stay tuned, you might have a good Christmas |

...I think I've reported this before someplace on this board, but Falcom decided to come out only with the EDGE usb evdo modem for now.
They've delayed their evdo usb modem, according to their reps, until next year sometime when QualComm comes out with some kind of new chipset that seems very important to them to wait for some reason.
Regarding Frankln, the President of their company initially told me they'd be shipping in September. Then October. And now he doesn't return my emails...
...so perhaps they're waiting for the new QualComm chips as well?
Anybody got any new info? |

| Good, because Franklin and Falcom are *definitely* little fishes. They don't know their blanks from a hole in the ground, either company... |

Not *exactly* what you want, but Merry Xmas anyway:
http://www.elandigitalsystems.com/adapter/u132.php
This one is new and finally supports Cardbus via USB 2.0. Why they haven't contacted Michael yet so that he could help them sell a ton, I dunno.
Hmm, so far, can't find 'em for sale anywhere though. Michael - care to get the dirt from them on availability?
Edit: In addition, I bet they could rework the plastics and make a front-panel version since the cable length wouldn't be an issue here (it'd be a long USB 2 cable and not a long cardbus/pcibus extender cable)...

I have contacted them to inquire about pricing/availability and to get a demo OR purchase one.
This isn't really an EVDO USB modem, but does offer a solution for those without a PC Slot. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Rats, they say it won't be in production until February 2006. Oh well.
