Am new to this forum and router...

I'd like to be able to use this router as a replacement for my DSL, and would like to be able to simply replace my DSL modem with it, and have to deal with a minimum of integration issues. I've got it working (sort of) now in that fashion, but, of course, the port forwarding type stuff no-workie. Sad

Obviously I've got double-NATing issues...

So my questions are: Does OPENWRT support IP Bridging? Has anyone tried it?

Well my first release of the firmware IS ready.. I have the .bin, .trx firmware and all of my source code modifications all packaged up. I have the source changes uploaded already.. but I'm having trouble uploading the firmware as my internet cant seem to handle uploading a 1.8mb file.

My main connection actually comes through this router.. I dropped the dialup a while back. I live in a fringe area though, so although I can get decent download speeds, I get horrible upload speeds (this has nothing to do with the router, its exactly the same in my laptop).

Well anyway.. I'll keep on working on getting the firmware uploaded... but for those who know their way around Linux heres the source modifications to OpenWRT and the linux kernel:

I wondered if you could pass along the changes you made to OpenWRT to fix the upload speeds. I utilized this forum and the firmware included to get a WL-500g router going with a U720 EVDO modem (USB as opposed to PCMCIA).

What I have set up is a PPTP vpn that automatically bridges the network behind the WL-500g with our corporate LAN, and the user is reporting that it is slower than it used to be when they had the U720 directly connected to the PC (and using Windows VPN client). I have pulled most of the configuration from your firmware but wondered if you actually recompiled some kernel module or something, or set some setting that I missed.

After some more searching it looks like I found two things:

First, I think I answered one of my questions, which was whether or not you recompiled the kernel or just repackaged everything for an easy inatall. My WL-500g router does not like the maxDsize and maxUsize entries in usbserial. Since I only got this forum back in a Google search on those key words, I am guessing that you recompiled that module to support those parameters, and that is the basic fix of the speed issue. Is there any way for you to post just that module change (or the code so I can make sure the U720 product code is in there)?

Second, it looks like there is a second option, which is recompiling the basic kernel with an updated airprime module. If I don't hear anything back from this forum, I'm going to proceed with that option as the other discussions on this issue (in the regular Linux world) seem to favor the airprime update as opposed to the usbserial update.

I guess there is a 3rd option, as it looks like Kamikaze has an updated airprime module to suport many of the EVDO modems.

I realize this is somewhat off-topic for this post, but you all have done such a good job with getting the PCMCIA version working that I figured a little help on the USB side wasn't out of the question.

..I really am about to go insane with my IP connections limited to 512 at one time by the default Linksys firmware. Any chance of uploading the newly written and configured firmware, Mr. Wizard?

By the way, when you do get it uploaded, can you please make sure that it's able to be flashed directly to the WRT54G3G? (Meaning the hex codes are changes to the appropriate values.) That would help those who are coming directly off of the default firmware, as I suspect most people would be doing.

This may get me kicked off here, but I can't help but say something in defense of of evdo-wizard and heavlyarmdpokey. They have branched off from the main development of OpenWRT and are providing, for free, a turnkey solution. Had I been either of them, I would have abandoned this effort after getting a message like "oh, and please make sure it'll go onto my router without me having to think at all."

I was never an advocate of Linux, but the folks that put together OpenWRT made me a believer, at least in its use in this type of situation. It's simply amazing what you can do with a little blue box. As much as I previously disliked Linux, the OpenWRT platform has a vast amount of doucmentation to kick-start your experience and make learning quick and easy.

The WiKi on their website is full of very useful information, not to mention the forums also hosted on that site. In order for you to have success with this platform, you're going to have to learn some of this stuff for yourself, or you'll inevitably exhaust the resources of relying on other people to provide a turnkey solution.

My hat's off to evdo-wizard and heavlyarmdpokey...I don't have the time nor the patience to do what you're doing. You've helped me immensely by posting what you have.

For the last 2 two days my service has been strolling down hill. Today it reached it's worse ever @ 60% packet loss on average. I called sprint tech support, and they asked "Have you defraged your hard drive lately? I wanted to jump through the phone and just kick his a**. I use linux, but I didn't dare tell him that, and the router runs pokeys firmware, but I didn't dare tell him that either. My phone call was terminated by poor cellular service before we could really get anywhere.. I didn't bother calling back, I will give them a couple of more days to get it fixed, if they can't get it right again I will sue to get out of the contract.

LinkSys has relased the new firmware, it is version 2.01.12 and it addresses the upload issue. Get the new firmware and see the release notes at this link. I haven't installed it yet, am about to now.

So, did they fix the "lockout" or "dead" problem? The one where the internet goes down, but the router never takes actions to repair the problem? If not, I am sticking with heavily pokey's firmware in conjunction with my script. Still works well. Although I have been starting to get the feeling that the router is about to die lately. To many strange issues.
