I'm completly lost on how to upload the very first step? I've tried downloading this openwrt-wrt54gs_v4-<type>.bin and uploading it into the router firmware. Doesn't work as it says it's an invalid file type? Please explain a bit more for a dummy.

Did you get it from openwrt.org or x-wrt.org? I remember getting that too before I found the link in the first post here. I just took a quick look at openwrt.org and it looks like they updated Jul 26, but what is it?

The version found in the first post here works. Try that one.

Edit:
By the way, the file name you mentioned looks like it's for a differnt model router. You want the 3g version, it's special since it has the pcmcia slot. wrt54g3g-st is the router this forum is about.

Thank you so much for you firmware to eliminate the fixed upload. Ive now encountered a problem maintaining a constant connection. It is staying sonnected but data flow seems to have stopped. Can someone please instruct me on how to create some type of chrono script to disconnect then reconnect the px-500 about every 2 or 3 hours.

First I'd like to express my deepest gratitude for the firmware posted on this thread. It has raised my upstream speeds from 25Kb/s to 120Kb/s. My problem now is that I am being forced to manually disconnect then reconnect the PPP interface (Pantech PX-500) to get my connection back on-line. I have a little linux experience but not for the past few years. Is there a simple script that can be written for openwrt 3g-st to tell the router to Disconnect Then Reconnect on the hour. I feel this would solve my connectivity issue. Thanks again for any help and/or ideas guys,...

First off:

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HARD WORK ON THE OPENWRT FIX!!!

Secondly:

Any word on the new firmware that allows the all-mighty blue light??

***********************

Additionally - I'm not sure of my signal strength here in Middle TN, I do know that I am 4 miles from the nearest tower, and my SPRINT phone varies from 2-3 bars.

Some nights, I can get 1200 K down, others only 400k down - rebooting and everything!!! Seems like a strange variation. I have ordered an OMNI antenna from 3gstore, and I'm excited about it.

My sadness is just that even WITH the new firmware fix, my highest upload is about 180k on a good day. Hoping antenna will fix it, what do you guys think??

thanks again!

good news everybody.. i can compile firmware again.

not that it matters to any of you since i haven't put anything up for download, but at least I can work on it now. I compiled an openwrt firmware today with X-wrt, and changes to specific webif pages (such as setting up a 3g card and viewing connection status.. etc.) and various other things. This firmware would need no extra steps.. it would basically be as easy to setup as the Linksys firmware because I re-compiled several things for ease of use.

I put this firmware on my router today.. but theres some strange bug and its not stable yet.. I'm working on it (really).

@HeavilyArmedPokey

i compiled a patched usbserial package that has product and vendor ID's of all 3g cards that I could find built into source, and as well it accepts the maxDSize and maxUSize parameters. I can put it up so you can use it in your firmware if you want (since i don't know when ill release mine). also ill give you source diffs just PM me about it.

evdo-wizard, you my friend are awesome! Can you include a keep alive script in this new firmware so that hopefully we don't experience the frequent disconnect issue anymore? Thanks!

i already have a simple script, that will ping a specified IP (you can change it in webif) and reconnect if pings fail.

I'm going to see about including the script that joshuamcdo wrote (it is a lot better than mine)... but for now though my script does the job.

OK well I'm running my OpenWrt firmware on my router right now.. and its finally working the way I want it to. I'm about ready to upload it to the net.

These are the features so far:
No extra configuration
Patched upload and download speeds
X-Wrt
Webif status and connect/disconnect page
Modified webif network page
Full button/led support
Keepalive script (if specified in the webif)
Seperate interfaces for wan and wwan (will allow failover)

For those that don't know, the webif is just the router's page that you can get to in your web browser.

Failover isn't finished yet. The support for it is there, as the WAN and WWAN interfaces are set up separately. All that needs to be done is a simple script that will toggle between the two interfaces. As I will release the sources and scripts, i'm sure that it will be finished soon.

Thanks indeed! Now that I have done a few weeks of testing with the Linksys beta firmware I am itching to try out OpenWRT.

Thanks so much for your hard work!

No, not at this point. DD-WRT will probably never have the pcmcia support that the wrt54g3g needs.. and I'm not about to add it myself. DD-WRT might have a better web interface.. but for now our best bet is definitely OpenWRT.

Speaking of OpenWRT.. I just might put up my firmware today. I'll make a new thread for it when I do so its not cluttered.
