Here's a first attempt at an EVDO performance-enhancement guide--I've attempted to make it applicable to both Sprint and Verizon, but don't have any Verizon-specific info as of yet. Some references I see thus far that seem to apply:
Applicable to both Verizon EVDO and Sprint EVDO:Sprint-EVDO specific:
I encourage others to add their tips and even more people to validate any supplied suggestions. If I can get to it, I'll try to update this "top" post with the validated suggestions.
Details:
fyi, I'm doing this mostly because my Sprint EVDO performance seems about 1/3 of other posters, and I'm trying to figure out why; I suspect that local-cell-tower-resource contention has something to do with it, but I'm hoping there's more that I can do about it then just use my evdo card at a different time or place. I suspect someone can point me to a "here's why performance can vary by location and time" post--is such a thing exists, please update this thread.

fyi, I just increased the TCP receivece window size and have doubled the download bandwidth in the vast majority of my tests (I was hovering around 300-400kbps originally, now I'm routinely seeing 600-900kbps according to http://gambitdesign.com/bandwidthmeter/ ).
I'm still waiting for 3gstore.com to give me my "master lock code" or "MLS code" so I can try a different Home Agent. I also have a booster antenna on order. |

Excellent, I've added the reference in the top post (and also made the thread a little more usable for Verizon users), and may be using these DNS servers in general as well for my other network interfaces (because my current DNS servers seem to lag quite a bit).
An aside: The folks at OpenDNS (judging solely by their website) seem to have their stuff together; any idea what they get out of it? Advertising revenue, some brand benefit, etc? Otherwise, is there a place where one can donate to this service for their good work/service? |

Additionally, this post troubles me:
A report about a firmware and connection-manager upgrade slowing performance
I've replied to the thread asking the poster to provide some additional info, but I have yet to hear anything.
In any case, the basic question that arises: are more-recent device-firmware or connection-manager-software versions potentially contributing to decreases in EVDO performance? |

There are plenty of other DNS servers you can use for free that don't redirect you to ad/search pages. I've never quite understood the infatuation with OpenDNS.
I personally use 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2, mainly because I can pull them from my memory, and they've always worked without issue. |

| Agreed with the last poster, 4.2.2.1/2/3/4/5/6 are the way to go. Easy to remember and always reliable. They use ANYCAST, which is a feature similar to 'round robin' DNS configurations but for IPs. None of the IPs address a single machine or location. You will instead get whichever is closest. I believe they are owned and operated by Level3/Verizon. |

Excellent. Can anyone confirm the ownership of these IPs, provide references to their support, etc? I'd like to know before I start using their dns service in the future (for possibly many networks/machines). |

i have used 4.2.2.1-3 for several years and it works well and easy to remember..

I tried OpenDNS for 3 months and find 4.2.2.1-6 is much better. OpenDNS tries to mother you too much by doing adult site blocking. Unfortunately, it blocks half the videos on Metacafe.com, which are not porn. For instance, it blocked this splendid exercise video,

I too strongly recommend 4.2.2.1-6
