I seem to easily be able to get 600 - 700 k UP on web based speed tests, but can never reach that on a single ftp upload. I can usually only hit 250 - 300 on a single ftp connection. If I have 2 going at the same time (same or different servers), I can hit over 800, sometimes 900 k up, sustained. |

| well i just tried something with a torrent and got almost sustained 80 kb while uploading before was like 20kb more or less....so the tweak is "appearing" there too, not only on the speed tests |

| I've always been able to get great upload on torrents with a lot of peers (multiple TCP connections), just not a SINGLE FTP connection. |

My FTP tests were inconclusive. But I think I may know why browser transfers are improved but not FTP ones. I just need a little time to look into it. Will post when I find out more. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

Do you know how to use RegEdit?
If you do and know how to browse to the right location in the registry, here is a final set of instructions I PM'd to some else a while back.
| Quote: | | OK, if you can get to the right place in the registry using Regedit, then there are just a few more steps. Once you are in the right place, go to the menu, select Edit, then New, then DWORD Value. Now a new highlighted entry should be showing in the Registry window on the right. While it's still highlighted, rename it to DefaultSendWindow. Then, double click on the new SendDefaultWindow entry, and an Edit DWORD Value window should pop up. In the Value data: box, type in 78000 (or whatever value you want to try). Then click OK. Exit Regedit. Reboot computer. You should be all set. |
If you don't know how to use regedit, start here:

for a tutorial and then come back if you're still having trouble.

*smacks forehead* I've used RegEdit before (as I remember seeing the "HKEY_Local" thing), but it totally eluded my mind to use it; thanks Walter!
edit: if this doesn't work, I can just delete the file you told me to make, right?
Also, can this be done on Windows 2000? I tried looking in the registry, and everything was there, except "parameters", just "security", and "enum" I believe. |

Hmmm, not sure if the entry exists for 2000 or not. Might just be for XP. I'll check the references I found when I get home later tonight. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

ok thanks; well, I tried your tweak, and my upload improved on FireFox; I removed it and rebooted, and it got worse; thus, I do believe it is working! Thanks!
Now, if I can get the download issue resolved, I'll be one happy fox!
edit: here's the results of your ingenius tweaking idea:
before, I was getting about 600-700k down and 100k up (with FireFox), now I'm getting this....I'll do a test with the router hard-wired to see just HOW much it did boost the download.
edit: here's the speed I get when I hard-wire:
so the tweak helped the download and the upload both! I would love to see what the upload really is (since the router reduces the upload for some reason). Now, if I can get the wireless issue solved, I'll be overjoyed. |

WOW! i love this forum....
i set the DWORD value at 7800 and here are my results
BEFORE:
AFTER:
honestly, before tweaking the RWIN, i was occasionally get 300+kbps uploads - since then my download speed more than doubled but my uploads dropped to the 90kbps range....with this tweak i'm finally getting decent download and upload speeds
question, i went to http://miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123/ and this was my result:
| Quote: | running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 850.77Kb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 956.95kb/s
Your PC is connected to a Cable/DSL modem
Information: The receive buffer should be 139657.5 Kbytes to maximize throughput |
how do i go about doing the latter? or is something i have no control over?
thanks!

Does the "Walter tweak" only help FF, or IE7 as well?
Thanks,

i'm getting faster uploads on both FF and IE6 - but i never experienced the same issue that walter was having, both browsers gave me the same (disappointingly low) upload speeds...

IE7 seems to do this tweak itself. And I know that's possible because the tweak sets a default value for the send buffer that is used if the application does not set it itself. There is a function call that an application can make to adjust this buffer size at runtime. Looks to me as if IE7 makes this call and adjusts the buffer size while FF2 does not.
For those who know the difference, I'll also point out that this buffer is at the socket (Winsock) level of Windows; not at the TCP stack level. I'm still trying to find out if there is an equivalent TCP stack level adjustment that can be made. Since not everyone is seeing this same problem, I figure that there is some lower level mechanism that is coming into play and that this tweak simply compensates for it; it doesn't really "fix" it.
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately ), life tends to intrude and I have not had time to investigate further yet. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve.
