WRT54G3G-ST Upload Issue

Personally, I don't think that Sprint had anything to do with the firmware or the router other than licensing, so I wouldn't blame it on them.

Linksys just makes piss-poor firmware, which is why there are at least 5 alternative firmwares for their most popular router, the WRT54G. The only reason that Linksys routers are semi-decent is because their firmware uses the Linux kernel. All that Linksys does to make their firmware is take a Linux kernel and pile their crap on top of it.

But putting all of this aside, I still like Linksys routers because from a hardware standpoint they are very capable, and most of all because you can put alternative firmware on them.

Linksys furnished the hardware, Sprint generated the firmware for the hardware. Buggy stuff at that too!

where do you get that idea? I honestly want to know why everybody thinks Sprint made the firmware for this router. They had nothing to do with it. How do I know that? Well, for one, look at the European version of the router, called just the WRT54G3G:

Did Sprint make that firmware too? In the actual source code of the wrt54g3g-st 2.0.0.9 firmware, there are references to Verizon, T-Mobile, and the 3G cards that the European version supports. Do you really think that Sprint would add support for Verizon's cards?

edit: Blast! You found your mistake! An man, was I hoping that that REALLY clunky laptop was the newest router on the market.

All jokes aside, you do bring up a good point.

The question is, does the WRT54G3G suffer from the same upload issues that the Sprint version does?

haha the pictures just magically changed on me.. I thought it was a joke that the admins were playing on me, but no the picture actually changed to an old computer.

I would bet that the wrt54g3g suffers from the same exact issues. I could find out for sure by downloading the source code for the european wrt54g3g, but thats ~200mb that I don't feel like dealing with.

And, I guess it's a hard point to get across, but there is no Sprint version of the firmware. I've looked around enough in the source code and tinkered with it enough to know that Sprint didn't make the firmware. I mean, I guess its not impossible but I find it very very unlikely. Of course you might not of meant it that way... but I'm just making sure.

Thats more than I saw with the beta firmware. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get OpenWRT to play nice with my PC5750 on Alltel. I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing wrong in the configuration or what but it won't hold a connection.

I got a call from an escalation manager just a little bit ago..besides giving me the old BS lines as normal...I FINALLY got someone to admit that the fix is in Beta and that "he is being told that it will be available to the public around mid-September"
That's what I've been told..believe it or not..not my decision..just a stupid messenger...

Here is what I know...

Yes, LinkSys writes the firmware, BUT Sprint is their customer and they are the ones that request fixes and updates from LinkSys.

When this thread started, I contacted our contacts at Cisco and they said the request for the update has to come from Sprint and that the request has yet to happen. I followed up last week and the request still wasn't made by Sprint.

Not really sure who to believe or exactly what is going on.

I am escalating this with some people I know at Sprint that usually can get issues resolved quickly.

I hope that this doesn't come down to Sprint not making the request.

this was a call from Cisco that I received. He made similar statements also, or at least in the same line. What he told me was, because there were multiple companies involved in the service for this to work, they had to get permission before they did this (ie ..my guess Sprint), so that might have been what happened.

So..in learning a lesson and reading between the lines, even though it is a Linksys router, and they do the code..it sounds like in fact, they are a "Customer" it's self of Sprint, instead of being "partners" which is the way I was looking at it. Does that sound like the way the setup is then?

Michael, did Sprint ever get back to you regarding the status of their beta firmware? Sure has been a long test with a tightly controlled test group; surely something must be happening.

Of course, other events, QoS fix, multiple 3rd party firmware lines, have made it less pressing, but some official word from the OEM would be nice.

I just sent an email to the person in Cisco that I've been exchanging email's with and here is what he just replied with:

They found a new bug and it got sent back to be fixed.

Looks like another 6 months..maybe when wimax comes out..it will be fixed
