Umm ... I can honestly say that I did not read the fine print
Still, there are better ways to cap than dropping the connection to the KPC650 (which would reboot my KR1) so I am hopeful that is not the issue
Time to read up on the TOS tho ... Thx w1ngman |

Perhaps a better description of my "event" will help ...
Anatomy of a crash :
Router green status light goes dark (no light)
WAN activity stops
Router attempts to reboot (amber status light) and usually fails (no light)
Router crashes (red status light) after approx. 10-15 min.
Can reboot manually (cycle power) or from KR1 interface at any time during the "event" to recover.
Unfortunately, the reboot causes the KR1 log to erease, the the client log is as follows :
Eventlog (System)
Warning (TCP/IP Event ID 4226)
TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.
Information (TCP/IP Event ID 4201)
The system detected that network adapter SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.
Warning (DHCP Event ID 1003)
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 00E018958163. The following error occurred:
The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.
Information (Browser Event ID 8033)
The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{DAC80B19-5F11-41DA-89CA-30F4F774F1CD} because a master browser was stopped.
Information (TCP/IP Event ID 4201)
The system detected that network adapter SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.
Warning (DHCP Event ID 1007)
Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network Card with network address 00E018958163. The IP address being used is 169.254.176.203.
Warning (Server Event ID 2504)
The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{DAC80B19-5F11-41DA-89CA-30F4F774F1CD}.
I am by no means a network guru, but I am currently trying to research these event ID's ... Any input would be greatly appreciated. |

Finally managed to capture a reboot in the KR1 log ...
Bunch of these :
Jan 7 12:59:03 (none) user.warn klogd: FCS error; flush
Followed by :
Jan 7 12:59:31 (none) syslog.info -- MARK --
Jan 7 13:01:59 (none) daemon.info pppd[114]: Terminating on signal 15.
Jan 7 13:01:59 (none) user.warn klogd: Delete port 0 from peripheral port set. (0xc0)
Jan 7 13:01:59 (none) user.warn klogd: Total WLAN/WDS links: 1
Jan 7 13:01:59 (none) user.warn klogd: Device ppp's main Link ID 2 unregistered.
Jan 7 13:02:14 (none) daemon.notice pppd[13639]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0
Jan 7 13:02:14 (none) daemon.warn pppd[13639]: Couldn't restrict write permissions to /dev/ttyUSB0: Read-only file system
Jan 7 13:04:15 (none) daemon.notice pppd[13890]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0
Jan 7 13:04:15 (none) daemon.warn pppd[13890]: Couldn't restrict write permissions to /dev/ttyUSB0: Read-only file system
All greek to me, but maybe something will jump out at someone ... |

Based on some extensive Googling, here is what I have been able to find out about my system log ...
Warning (TCP/IP Event ID 4226)
This is a HOT one ... SP2 has resized the TCP/IP stack for security purposes (whole nuther topic there) and this warning indicates >10 half-open TCP/IP connections. Apparently when KR1 status light goes dark the client continues to attempt to connect causing this fault
Information (TCP/IP Event ID 4201)
Based on TCP/IP stack issue above client attempts to re-initialize network adapter
Warning (DHCP Event ID 1003)
Refreshed network adapter cannot renew its address from DHCP ... KR1 status is either dark or amber
Information (Browser Event ID 8033)
Client is unable to find master browser and elects itself as master ... KR1 status is either dark or amber
Information (TCP/IP Event ID 4201)
Based on Browser issue above client attempts to re-initialize network adapter ... Still no response from KR1
Warning (DHCP Event ID 1007)
Client automatically configures IP ... I have no idea where this IP comes from, but it is different in other peoples logs
Warning (Server Event ID 2504)
No clue here ... Think my computer is trying to maintain the network connection at this point
It would appear that my system log is saying that the KR1 stops responding and the client attempts to recover unsuccessfully ...
I have been unable, however, to find ANYTHING regarding the KR1 logs online ... Anyone here know what that stuff means ???? |

Although responding to my own posts seems to pad my stats it has failed to resolve my issue ...
Seems I am getting nowhere ... Still reboot daily and no clue why
Alltel has finally agreed to replace my 2nd KR1 (as recommended by Kyocera/Dlink support) so perhaps that will help ... Will post results either way, however, not overly optimistic at this point.
Thx for everyones help here |

Got my BRAND NEW KR1 yesterday ... RK1008 firmware out of the box
Set it up and rebooted itself in less than an hour ... Appears that my problem is not a defective KR1
Very frustrated ... Don't know what to do next ... Any suggestions ??? |

I have had this problem on three (3) seperate KR1 units across three (3) different firmware versions (RK1006, RK1007 and RK1008)
Kyocera Tech Support keeps calling the KR1 "defective" and recommending exchange, but what are the odds of 3/3 defective units ?
Wondering if there is truly any "defect" or if it is just a convenient way to end a Tech Support call
I believe that I may be going insane
What to try next ... Anyone ??? |

Alltel Data Techs working with me ... More homework
Trying to duplicate a crash outside the KR1 ... In other words plug the KPC650 into a laptop and replicate the conditions that will crash the KR1 to figure out if the card is glitching and causing the KR1 to lose it.
Interestingly enough, the Tech. wanted to see me hit a tower so he had me disconnect and reconnect and doing so in the KR1 software caused the problem !!!
Using the buttons above the signal meter, disconnected and the KR1 status light went dark, reconnected and the Tech. saw me connect to the tower, but the KR1 status remained dark and no WAN ... Had to reboot the KR1 to get a connection !!!
Also, the Tech. noticed that the connection attempt was simple IP only, not the default primary Mobile IP connection attempt ... Not sure what that means, but he seemed to think it points at the KPC650.
Writing this on my new laptop Will post results of my homework soon. |

Homework complete, but can't get thru to Alltel
4 hours on hold last night w/ no answer and on hold for hour already tonight
Able to crash the KPC650 in laptop with large data streams ... Believe this crash would cause the KR1 to "lose" the KPC650 (status light dark) and attempt a reboot
(3 bars / 500k)
windows update (~30Mb)
KPC disconnect (signal still 3/4 bars)
attempt reconnect "no dialtone"
reboot to reconnect
(3 bars / 500k)
windows update (~70Mb)
KPC disconnect (signal still 3/4 bars)
attempt reconnect "no dialtone"
~20min. then "USB beeps" (like plug/unplug a jump drive) and able to connect
Cntl-D (p/w diagsmsi)
Mobil IP preferred (correct default setting per Tech), but connection does not attempt Mobil IP
PRL Version 36606 (Tech recommended and supplied 30005), but do not know how to change
Will post Alltel's recommendation if they ever answer the phone ... |

Got thru to Alltel last night ...
Tech helped me load prl 3005, "zero" the card and re-authorize
KPC back in KR1 and downloaded over 100Mb last night ...
Previously, a data stream of that size would have almost certainly caused a reboot
Will do a serious stress test this weekend and post results ... |

Update time ...
Will start by saying that the above changes are a SIGNIFICANT improvement ... Still get occasional reboot, but much less frequently.
My stress-test consisted of multiple large downloads, windows updates and video streams with frequent speed testing mixed in to verify connection ... Lost connection once over the course of several days, so quite a bit better than before.
Unfortunately, Alltel informs me that since the card is more than 15 days old they do not handle warranty any longer and I must contact Kyocera directly to handle the warranty replacement.
Now I will be going through the entire process once again with a different 800 number |

The saga continues ...
Gave the new configuration a week and still have the same problem, although the connection is greatly improved (only 3 disconnects in a week and I was trying to crash it ... muahahahaha)
Called Kyocera support today to plead my case and was pleased to find that there was no argument and no further homework ... They agreed to replace my card immediately, however, they are currently out of stock on KPC650's and will contact me to arrange a replacement when one is available.
Seems odd that there are no KPC650's available at the manufacturer, but perhaps they are stocking up on Rev.A stuff currently ... Will give them a week before I pester them again |
