just switched to a new laptop with vista and my vzw pc5740 obviously didnt work so after checking the vzw site and this site and saw the software update was due late march i decided to go to a vzw store and see what they would do. to my great suprise they had just come out with an exchange plan for customers with vista laptops. they exchanged with no charge and no extension to my plan my pc5740 for a new pc5750 (which has rev a)! they would not exchange for a new express card or a usb card just a like card. the rev a works great in nyc - definitely faster than my old card! you can call vzw dts to verify or just go to a vzw factory store with your old non-vista capable card and get your new one...

p.s. the store 1st told me i needed to also return the software cd for the exchange to happen so i called dts and they corrected the person in the store (the dts tech said that was from the 1st draft of the exchange program...)

I just spent an hour talking to CS at Sprint because of problems with Connection Manager deciding to not re connect after it disconnected itself. I had to re-install connection manager in order for it to work again. The Tech told me to never use the Sprint Connection Manager. He said it was not created for Vista. Though it is compatible, it has flaws with Vista. He said to use the manual "Connect To"

By god, so far he has been right, no problems and actually connecting faster.

Give it a try.

The Merlin EX720 has been just fine on Vista. The only thing that has been finecky is the GPS. But it still finds me stores/restauraunts/gas stations, etc. I just cant get it to work with Google Earth Pro. But it works, and I even did a firmware update on it.

You can get these cards working through the DUN on 32-bit Vista computers. On the Curitel you have to disable the UAC and right click the desktop icon and properties, then select xp compatibility mode, then build a connectoid. On the Pantech you have to do the compatibility mode switch and build a DUN connectoid. obviously you aren't going to be using the SCM, so this is just a work-around. This may have already been posted. Just wanted to make sure everyone knew. Also you guys are going to love the new sprint connection manager coming shortly. Smile

Anyway, I found out their is a loop whole around this and I am trying to figure out how I can take advantage. One of the reps at sprint said that if I install the broadband card on XP first I could take the driver from one computer to another. I tried this but Vista can not find it nor recognize it. They told me not to install the software. They said for me to do a manual search for the drivers. Has anyone tried this? If so, can you give me a break down how you did it. Appreciate any help.

I too am running into exactly the same problem. Please let me know if you find a work around. Thanks.

I spoke with Microsoft and they advised me to try and disable "Driver Enforcement" by pressing F8 at start up. It worked but the only thing about this is that it can cause a security risk. I am willing to take that chance until they make a work around for Ultimate 64 bit. I hope this helps.

----

This worked for me, I had the same error, 1722.

Uninstall the Sprint software from Vista.
Boot to Safe Mode with command prompt.
From the command prompt, enter net localgroup Administrators LocalService /add
Verify using net localgroup Administrators
Restart Windows normally and install the Sprint software.

Hope it works for you.

I just uninstalled Sprint U720 connection manager then took your advise to ad the net localgroup Administrators. After adding this command, I went back and installed the connection manager and I still received the 1722 error. What did I do wrong?

Hmm. Not sure, I found the fix on a Microsoft board under a different problem that was caused by using AIM (dont do it) under Vista, but it also fixed the 1722 error for me.

I'm using Vista home premium and installed the latest software from the sprint download site. I think in some versions of vista the permissions for services are set a different way, so what I posted may not work for all vista versions, but i'm not all that sure.

I've had pretty good luck with Vista Professonal and my Verizon 595 card. I installed the Verizon connection manager while I was still running XP Pro, before I did the Vista upgrade (free with the Lenovo notebook I bought in December).

A word on upgrading an existing XP installation to Vista: you should seriously consider formatting the hard drive and starting with a clean install. (Fortunately, I had already partitioned my hard drive and had all my data separated from the OS and programs). Maybe it's just all the junk utilities that Lenovo includes, but the upgrade was a disaster and many of Vista's features -- like Network and Sharing Center, the volume control interface, and power settings -- didn't install correctly with the upgrade.

I greatly prefer the Vista Network & Sharing Center to the Verizon Connection Manager, but it seems impossible to get the new drivers without installing the Verizon software. I just installed the software, ran it once, then un-checked the box that runs it on startup.

Verizon just rolled out REV A in my area, and the new drivers made a HUGE improvement in my connection speeds.

Got a USB720 on Verizon running under 32 bit Vista... the VZAccess Manager software works, but I'd much rather use the modem in NDIS mode. Checking the box in VZAccess doesn't produce any errors, beyond the normal Prepaid warning, but the adapter doesn't appear in my network connections, and pressing Connect in VZAccess just sits there for a minute, then comes back and says "Not connected".

Thoughts? Anyone else been able to get it working?

I believe you are using NDIS wrong. It doesn't create a new network connection in Vista's Network and Sharing Center. Rather, when you plug the card into your computer, after about 30 seconds it automatically connects without you needing to do anything. So just close SCM after you make sure that NDIS is checked, and reboot your computer with the card plugged in. You should notice shortly after the reboot that the little icon in the corner shows Internet Connectivity.

I could be wrong about this whole NDIS thing, but from what I've read up about it, that's the way it works. Hope this helps.

*Edit: Just noticed you are with Verizon. I've heard that with VZAccess Manager, after clicking NDIS and then clicking OK or Apply, it switches back to no NDIS, so you may wanna check that out. But for me with Sprint it works beautifully.

I have successfully created a dial up connection with the Sprint PC-5740. I am using it now!

I have a new machine, with Vista 64 bit.

I am somewhat an amateur, but I will try to explain. Here's how it happened:

As a starting point, the wireless card must have first been activated using an XP system, so that it is a registered, active card.

First, I will go through this little story, because it could be important. I spent about an hour with a local Sprint technician who thought he might be able to set up a dial up connection, which had been successful on the 32 bit (this tech is excellent and always helpful to us). As you know, you can't install the connection manager for PC-5740 in Vista, and if you insert the wireless card it says can't find drivers. The tech's idea was to install the software for the Sprint Pantech PX-500, which is suppose to work with Vista, because Pantech & PC-5740 are both made by Curitel, so that maybe the drivers were the same and we could install the drivers from the Pantech software (you can install Pantech PX-500 from the Sprint website, although he installed it from a flash drive). Drat, it did NOT install the drivers. Tech had no more ideas. NOTE: I mentioned this because I think it may be necessary to install the Pantech software.

Anyway, I kept surfing for a solution and saw an article about creating a dial up connection (we'll get to that). The problem, of course, was installing the drivers and getting the machine to recognize the PC-5740 card.

In an unrelated matter, the Vista "problems report" indicated to me that updates were available for a couple of my programs. I went to Control Panel/Windows Update/Check for Updates to see if there was anything else. Well, it also said there was an update for Curitel pc card!! I tried to install it, but kept getting an error. Then, I inserted the PC-5740 card and then tried install. Presto! It opened a download driver software window, downloaded then installed the software, and gave me a message saying "device is ready to use". Yes!

FOLLOW UP: As I mentioned earlier, I wonder if you need to actually need to install the Pantech software. Probably not if you could simply download the Pantech update. I think it may be necessary in order to locate and download the Curitel update, presumably to the card? At least it makes it easier. I suppose if you can find the update you maybe able to download it directly.

Note that the Connection Manager software that was installed (Pantech PX-500) will not work with the card (it keeps saying to "insert card", even when inserted). However, now the machine recognizes the Curitel card so that you can create a "dial up" connection using the card. Here is a good article I found that explains how to do it, using #777 as the "phone number":

content.zdnet.com/2346-11515_22-54832-1.html

Leave the username and password boxes blank in the dial up manager.

(p.s. - I tried the comments posted in reply to the article about running Connection Manager in XP Compatability, but it did not work for me. I'm guessing it doesn't work in the 64 bit).

I had previously tried to create a dial up by following this article, but didn't get very far because my machine did not recognize the wireless card so that it was not an option to choose for a dial up connection. After installing the update/drivers, the machine recognized it and it was listed as a dial up option (also, I note that my machine identified the card as "Curitel" and not "Sprint" like in the article).

If you get this far, I will add one thing. After I first connected, and disconneted, I had trouble connecting again. When I got to the "Connect Curitel" window, I unchecked "Save this username and password for the following users", and then it connected right away.

Long story, but it works. The Sprint tech set me on the right track.

Good luck!!

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition with a Novatel U727 card. The easiest way to install without any errors is to NOT insert your Wireless card, but FIRST run the Installation software on the CD, and then install the drivers that way.

If you do it by inserting the card first, it will not recognize the drivers or the device properly, and you will need to configure it manually in the Device Manager.

I can say from experience that the Franklin cdu-680 device is compatable with just about every version of vista. I have Vista Ultimate on my own computer and was able to install it flawlessly. I have run into rare circumstances, mostly with Vista Business Basic, where it is unable to recognize or install the drivers for the flash drive part of the device, but a quick trip to the franklin website to download the program and install it before hand fixes even these rare situations.
