Many of my measurements so far indicate that standing the router vertically (with the PC Card facing upwards) is in fact the worst way to position it. YMMV.

Since the cards were originaly designed to fit horiztonaly into a laptop, this is probably accurate.

The funny thing is, outside of the nine of us here posting to this thread and then those stumbling across our dialog later, many will see the images of the WRT54G3G-ST on the box or elsewhere, or find the little plastic stand and just prop the router up ("like it is supposed to be"), going off their merry way.

Most folks are hardly nerdy enough to test various physical orientations. Meanwhile, doing so may grant them a 150-200 kbps increase in transfer rate (that's as fast as some folks even GET).

2ยข piece of plastic or engineering failure, you decide. lol.

Well, hopefully those people will find there way here and learn that they need to try several locations and orientations to optimize their Mobile Broadband connection.

Mine happens to work best with the router on the provided stand, facing west with the s720 antenna open, like a flag as you call it.

and yes the different orientations yielded delta of 500kbps in my results!

ranging from 700mbps laying flat pointing east with the antenna open to 1.2Mbps with the router on the provided stand, facing west with the s720 antenna open....

Imagine if you will that the wave front as it reaches your card is somewhat close to being a straight line. OK, one step more, imagine a pencil as being the wave and then hold it over your card and turn it hither and yon. My guess is that the best reception will be when the wave front is parallel to the antenna as the entire antenna would then receive the same bit of data at the same time. If the wave front is perpidicular to the antenna then each point on the antenna is going to be receiving a different bit of data. This logic may be a bit exagerated but I can see it clearly. However I do not know how significant this is.

I also have my WRT54G3G-ST with Merlin S720,
but the router cannot recognize the S720 card.

The firmware version of my WRT54G3G-ST is v1.99.8.beta-st,
how about yours?

Can you give me any advice to have it work? Thanks a lot.

Bill,

Did you activate you card in your computer before installing it in the router? I think that's necessary. Also, when using the installation wizard for the router, select "cable" as the network type, and use all automatic settings.

edit: My firmware is v2.00.4, and it works fine. Of course, to upgrade you will need to have the card working, or hook up dsl or cable to the router.

Good luck,
Bill

Hi Bill, Bill is correct, you must activate the card directly in a computer before you put it in the router.

To answer your question, my router has firmware v2.00.4 Aug. 9, 2006

The setup disk that came with it says software Version 4.0

I upgraded my s720 to firmware version "m6800A-RAPTOR_SPRINT-128 [SEP 08 2006 18:00:00]" But it also worked fine with version 125, which is what the card came with. The card firmware version upgrade has to be done directly in a computer, not with the card in the router...

Does Sprint provide the Firmware upgrades??

fastlane,

The router firmware upgrades will evidently come from Linksys. Here's what it says in the Firmware Upgrade page under the router Administration tab:
Quote:
Click the Upgrade button to load new firmware onto the Router. New firmware versions are posted at www.linksys.com and can be downloaded for free. If the Router is not experiencing difficulties, then there is no need to download a more recent firmware version, unless that version has a new feature that you want to use.

I'm sure that Bill would benefit from a newer firmware version than the Beta version that he has, but I don't find any for the WRT54G3G-ST on the Linksys downloads page.

Bill - where did you buy the router? If they can't supply the newer firmware, I would consider returning the unit and buying direct from Sprint.

Good luck!
Bill

This verbage from the Sprint page concerns me:
Quote:
allows up to four people to work wireless and simultaneously with their laptops

Is there some kind of firmware limitation on how many systems can connect through this router? I understand that there are four ethernet ports on it like any other standard router. But, with wireless and / or an extra hub you'd be able to have many more systems running through it.

What about hooking this up in a car?
- does it come with an adapter
- what voltage input does it take
- can you extend the WiFi antenna like the KR1
- can you extend the EVDO antenna (yes, this is card dependent?)

I like Linksys WRT54GLs on the desktop and put in about one a week for my customers. I'd like to stick with Linksys when possible.

Billgets, do you get any lights on the s720 when it is in the router? Red, Green, solid or blinking?

I am testing a Linksys router and I am using the S620 with good success. The speeds seem the same as the KR1, the connection so far seems consistant,

And most importantly, My ATT VPN client into DaimlerChrysler works great.

I was NEVER able to make VPN data pass on the KR1

However, this Linksys is a test unit from Sprint and it did not come with instructions. I need to know how to turn on the wireless. I do not know how to get to the admin page on this router.

Can anyone tell me the address.

Thanks,
Paul

Try leaving the user name blank and "admin" for the password, IIRC.

Good luck!
