DeSoto, MO, 7 miles out of time, middle of the woods on a hill. Coverage map shows me BARELY in the "roaming" section...

Sprint w/Sierra 595u hooked to a tablet pc using ICS - Full EVDO RevA connection, -95 to -105 dbi - speeds around 900/400 from 4 networked machines!!!

Ordered an external antenna and booster which should take me down in the -80s

BYE BYE HUGHESNET!!!!!!!!

Just because you're not in the "Green" areas, don't give up! Take the 30 trial they offer and try it out. I NEVER thought I would have anything other than Hughes *cringe* but Sprint has delivered me from evil!!

I second this. I have found solid EVDO Rev A signals miles from where the map says coverage ends and I should be roaming. Sprint coverage maps are very conservative since I'm sure they have figured out that it is better to underpromise and overdeliver than overpromise and underdeliver.

You sure thats Rev A? The upload speed should be higher.

Are you sure its Sprint?

Like you, we have good Rev0 Alltel roaming coverage.

This is really strange:

We (32536) recently got upgraded to Rev0, although Sprint flat out denies it.

I'm connecting "sprint only - no roam", and verified with ##DEBUG that I am on a different "tower" than with AllTel roaming, and that I am not roaming.

I had thought they where just doing something like "branding" the roam as Sprint. Its really strange. Sprint claims they cannot even see me connect, much less at EVDO (and again, Sprint says EVDO does not exist in my area).

From where I sit, the Sprint tower in 32536 is at least a couple of miles directly behind the Alltel tower, and the Alltel tower is about 1.8 miles line of sight. The signal strength is always identical when connecting to either.

If I go to the other "sprint tower" side of town (and closer to the tower), I still get EVDO, but the signal strength is less.

At best, I am suspicious of what is going on, and I think I really need to go visit the towers directly, and test um out.

I will be driving though Hattiesburg is the next few days, and will try it out.

Thanks!

Joe

Must be getting for WiMax around my neck of the woods. I was consistently getting 1200/300 previous to this. Last week, I started getting this:

Loaded my notebook pc, U727 card and Freedom antenna into my Burgman the other day and rode my scooter up to the first scenic overlook above Tucson on the Catalina Highway.
Set up stuff at the overlook about 2.6 miles up the mountain. Got REVA but had to point antenna towards Tucson, Arizona. It didn't seem to matter where in town I pointed to.
I can see mountains in Mexico from up there! There are no viewable cell towers in the Catalina Mountains as it is mostly national forest land.

I felt pretty confident so I rode on up the rest of the mountain (20 miles) then once again set up the PC, card and antenna at a overlook at the 7,000 foot level, just below Mount Bigelow (broadcast antenna farm).
From there, I was unable to get REVA, only 1xRTT roaming. The message screen said that the server was unable to connect even though I could see three bars of strength.

Riding back down to about the 4,000 foot level, I was able to connect to another 1xRTT connection and use my browser for a few minutes until time to go.

Next time I'll do speed tests and take pictures.
